It runs so much quieter now! So much so that I could actually hear an exhaust leak... It would also make popping noises when abruptly letting off the throttle, which to my knowledge is ambient air being sucked back into the cylinder and can lead to burnt valves.
The exhaust manifold mounting flange had broken off at an obvious stress concentration.

The last thing I wanted to do was try to remove the manifold and snap off bolts, so I looked into welding and brazing. I came across something relatively new, MIG Brazing. The silicon bronze wire is a tad expensive, and it requires 100% argon, but what the hey, why not?

I cleaned up the areas to be brazed and beveled the broken flange, and then proceeded to make a boogery mess.
I built up a bit of material over numerous passes to get rid of the sharp corner that lead to the original cracking.

Mostly a success! Not the prettiest, and a little bit of exhaust still escapes between the manifold flange and the downpipe flange where I couldn't get the gun, but it no longer does the pop pop!

With the engine seemingly sorted, its time to see to the drivetrain, which for the most part is just fresh fluid. Mostly...

I don't remember the 4WD on the Scout ever working during my uncles ownership. Low range worked, but the front driveshaft was sheared in half and removed, sent off to be welded, and never put back in, or so the story goes...

After reinstalling the driveshaft awhile back, I turned the front differential by and hand it felt less than great, and would get stuck in random positions. There were more pressing issues at the time so I left it for later, which is now.

Turns out people saying the Dana 30 is weak are right. It looks like this was done long ago, as it was bone dry.
It also looks like someone had taken off the cover and seen this damage before, as there was only remnants of gasket material.

Good news is everything else still had gear oil in it and the rear Dana 44 looks fine!

The precious fluid transfer continues...
I don't think I've ever seen GL-1 in person, at least not fresh stuff.

I decided to tackle the fuel tanks. The driver side only pulls a gallon or two before it starts pulling air, and the passenger side wouldn't even prime.
I pulled the passenger pickup tube and found it plugged with rust. I was expecting it find it rotted off at the water line, so this is a welcome outcome.
Some copper wire and compressed air and it's good as new. I will wait to put it back in until I've pulled the other one, just in case it IS rotted off and I need to duplicate it.

Driver side fill tube had a tiny bit of rust starting to build up near the bottom, but no other issues. I think the issue with the driver side was me not remembering how much gas was in there...
Anywho, both tanks are buttoned up and back in. Both prime and will run the truck now!

The fresh gear oil also made a difference when shifting. I wouldn't say its great, but definitely less bad.

This was cool, something I'd never heard of before, a Jowett Javelin Jupiter. One of 900 made:

I also took the Scout to the gas station for the first time in probably 17 years. Oddly enough, about the same price per gallon as 2008.
Maybe next time I'll park midway between two pumps so I can fill both tanks simultaneously!

I braved the 45 mile round trip to work and back on Friday. The Scout did fine. No over heating, no explosions or other catastrophies.
I stayed off the freeway, as anything above 45 mph starts to feel sketchy.

I stalled it once at a stoplight, but it fired right back up. On the way home the passenger side tank ran out so I had to pull off for a few seconds for the driver's side to prime and catch up. Best to do it before it empties I guess.

Hooray!
