On my 1962 fj40 the left rear tail light is on when no key is on. Any suggestions

I turned the headlight switch on and it doesn’t affect that light. It stays on. I then turned the left turn signal switch on and the light turned off. I’m thinking the problem is in the turn signal switch.

I don't suspect the turn signal switch as alluded to earlier, since both front and rear signals are powered by the same strip inside the lever mechanism. Easiest is to test at the 6 bullet connectors. The green/light blue wire should always have power but none of the others should be powered with the stalk off.

If green/white has power, you have constant power flowing through the stop light switch with the brake pedal fully released. A continuity test over the two leads coming from the stop light switch will confirm whether it is interrupting the current. If it stays open, you can try to clean it up but I have not had luck with that and rather sourced a NOS unit.

If the green/orange wire has power with the stalk in the off position you are flowing current through the turn signal wiring but then you have a further issue since the front is not lighting up also. Again, the switch mechanism inside the black clamp housing can easily be swopped out with the barely available new production items if you want to retain patina or you can use the whole new assembly on your LHD 40.

Hope this helps.

Don't care what the problem should be an easy fix. Tail light share the same wire. Turn brakes are separate. Do both brake lights work with the pedal down. Does the turn signal work. My 68 turn signal switch was wire all wrong when I bought in 1974. Like the 62 it all separate wire at the switch. I just pull all the wire off and started over. Just did it again for a member who was restoring a 68 up by our cabin. It wire from the brake switch that needs to be figured out first. It like a puzzle the more wires you get figured out the easier.it.gets.
