Hey everyone,

My starter started having issues turning over and the battery drain was high after less than a minute of cranking so I figured it was time to replace or repair the starter, but I'm having a hard time getting to the top bolt. I can get a wrench on it, but there just isn't room to turn the wrench. Btw, I did have the battery tested the other day and it checked out ok.

Any suggestions?

it is a TIGHT fit with the OE starter. I use a combo wrench with the box end on the bolt, wrench facing backwards, and tuck it BEHIND the block before dressing over the bolt to get a little more swing out of each reset.

Maybe I just needed a shorter wrench. It didn't seem like there was the room to go behind like your saying. I did try a box end ratcheting style, but it was too think and the wrench couldn't get a bite on the nut.

I'm wondering if there is room to use a crowfoot wrench?

You will offend the cruiser gods using that SAE tool on a metric bolt. Be prepared to buy another bellhousing!

I dunno Robert. I actually don't own any crowsfoot wrenches.

I've never owned a crowsfoot wrench either. I don't remember having any real problems getting that bolt out. I may have used a breaker bar that the end swiveled and then cheater on that for leverage. Seems the hardest part was just getting it to break free. Is it still at your dads house? Could possibly find some time in the next couple of days to give you a hand.

A hundred posts in eleven years?

I won't be holding my breath!:D

Glad I found this old thread as I'm damn sure they would have heard me all the way at the Takaoka Plant removing the OE starter!
