Ok is everyone reporting an adjusted MPG for all there different tire and gear changes? I use this calculator using a close to stock tire size of 29" and the 4.11:1 gear. http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearratio.htm Then I adjust the numbers to my now 35" tires and 4.88:1 gears.
This gear/tire combo is very close to stock odometer speed.

Matt,

I understand that you were not try to say your cruiser was better than anyone else's. I was trying to let others know that a properly tuned 40 can get good mileage too. To be truthful, I am a fan of fuel injection. My 4Runner is fuel injected and I love it.

I've had many cruisers (40's, 45's, 80's) over the years, and the TBI EFI mod is the single best thing I've ever done. For me, it was like a completely different engine and tranny. Different shift points, everything....blown away.

With regard to mileage, the only way to really do it is with a scangauge or similar method of measurement, as you cannot go by the odometer on these rigs. Though you can calculate the percentage that your odometer is off, etc., you'd likely get more accurate results from a scantool and/or gps IMHO.

Hey,
Whats the big deal, I get 23-24MPG corrected for 33" BFGs.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Turbocharged 3B.
HAHA

3B turbo....nice...

All I was saying is that you cannot trust your odometer....most folks don't realize that your speedo and odometer are off by a % percentage % which you COULD calculate, etc, but you are still assuming that your odometer/speedometer is accurate. You could fill up and then do laps around a track or similar...I'm sure GPS is an alternative, and perhaps it's pretty accurate on clear days, etc. and you could perhaps try that as well. Check this out: My buddy Larry has the same vintage truck with the same gearing, etc. Both 1978's and run the same exact tires, etc. His speedo reads way off and therefore his odometer is too. This is driving the same highway together. Our clusters read at least 10 miles difference. I'd expect this on a 30 yr-old rig. Therefore, despite doing the mathematical calculations and adjusting for tire size, etc., your basis is still the odometer/speedometer which is most likely inaccurate. Just my .02 worth.

Another way to confirm or calculate to see if it is accurate would be to do a route in a vehicle that you know is stock/accurate, then do it in a cruiser to see how it compares...

In other words:
I do regular weekend trip to my cabin that is 160miles, usually I take the car. ODO is off in the 40 due to 33's, but I still know it is 160miles so all I have to do is see how much gas I use and divide to calc. milage.

I dream of getting better than 11mpg. Thanks for the encouragement from this thread...I plan to tune the carb to see how well I can get it, (stock setup). Maybe one day I will go the injection route.

With a nice 1bbl on an f145, you can get the same mileage:grinpimp:

Long live the 1bbl.

x2 . I <3 my 1bbl.

Glad to hear that your happy with with your MPG. Oil hit the $100 mark recently and every bit you can squeeze out of a gallon saves you.
