I had seen recently a 1990 prado cruiser in vancouver and It had factory 16 inch aluminum wheels. It is the style of rim that was very popular on canadian forerunners. I was wondering if that would fit and be the right offset for a bj74?

Thought I'd add to this thread instead of starting a new one. I've got the same rims on my LJ78 and I'm wondering what size they are (width and offset...not height...their 16s) or what the maximum width I can go with on new tires is. The current new set are 215/80R16s and are basically bicycle tires (you can see a pic of it in the "help removing stickers thread"). I'd like to go with 245-285 in width. I know that changing the ratio can affect the accuracy of the odometer but I always take it slow anyways so I'm not worried about a ticket. The one thing that is a bit of a pain here in Japan is that every 2 years you have to get an inspection and one of the things that they check is the width of your vehicle. This affects the license plate you use. I know I can go with 245/70/R16s safely but over that and it probably won't pass. My other option is to get a second set of wheels and just swap them when neccessary (this is my preferred choice even though I like the stock rims). I have a set in mind but I need to know what size and offset to get. Here is a link to the wheels (Japanese site...sorry) and a picture of how I'd like it to look after (this Prado has 285/75/R16s-do you think it is lifted at all?). I don't have over fenders so 285s might be a bit too wide. I think 255 would be good. Suggestions are certainly welcome. I don't do a lot of hard core off-roading, I just want it to look good and be reasonably effective for occasional camping, fishing and exploration trips. One other thing...since this is Japan, when you talk about lifts do you still use 2" and 3" or is there a metric equivalent? I've never seen anyone refer to anything but inches on here although tires are mentioned in both. Hmmm. Thanks in advance for your expertise! :beer:

I just put 33" x 10.5" tires on my stock 6" wide rims and the tires seem to crown in the middle of the tread instead of sitting flat. So I just picked up a set of 8" wide rims which I hope will help with this. (at the shop getting powder coated just now) I think with the stock rims the new tires will wear uneven because of this crown, or am I wrong? The truck also seems to wander on the road more now than it ever did before. Also because of the crown?

wider tires want ride the crown more than skinnies, just the nature of the beast. i have 12.5 on 10 rims with caster and camber within spec and the tires want to ride the crown, you could increase the caster settings and it 'might' help. i have had mixed results doing this.

wider tires also eat more fuel due to rolling resitance...handle poorer (in general) but the ride 'should' be better due to a larger ballon sitting under the truck...

it is all a trade off....
