Sooooo .. I'm getting an amazing deal on some Nitto Mud Grappler 37x13.50x17 tires and I want to run them on the FJ Cruiser steelies which measure 17x7.5 ... The Nitto's are 14.27" section width

I have ran 12.50's on a 7" rim before with zero issues, but this is a little more ...

I know they will mount, but what problems do you think I could be facing down the road ???

Thanks dudes,

-Josh

Wide tire + skinny rim = poor man's beadlock :hillbilly:

I run 33x12.50's on 7" rims and no problems. But like you said, you had no problems with that either... I wouldn't imagine anything serious with the wider tire, just funny wear (i.e. crowning).

But if you're anything like me, you wouldn't care about that...

haha, I am ... I care about major effects, like blowing a bead, but I don't care about the wear ... They don't last long enough to care about something like that ... They are mounted on 8" wide rims now (5 lug though) what is 1/4" on each side???

But I just wanted some good advice before hand ...

Yeah, I am planning on re-gearing to 4.88's ... 35's on 4.10 are actually not bad, imo ... BTW these tires weigh 80 POUNDS each ... I could barely pick them up, kinda scary ... 10 ply ...

Don't think I'd do it! Don't think it is optimal wheel width for tire width IMO.

bump .... for more advice

That's the answer I needed ... I just wasn't sure if it would hold better or be easy to knock off ...

like I said above ... I don't care about the wear ...

Thanks bra,

Depending on the wheel or tire mfr I've seen the recommend minimum ratios of as little as 65% but most will say closer to 70-75%. Several people ignore that and get away with it. You'd be at 55%. I wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't want these on steel rims just because of weight. My tires are also 80 lbs each, I wouldn't want to add 20 more lbs just to have steel rims.

Having said this, plenty of people run the 37x13.5x17 Toyos on stock rims, and you are only 1/2" narrower. So weight would be my issue, not width.

Does anybody know the difference in weight between the FJ Cruiser Steel wheels and the alloy ???

I run 37x12.5/17 on 7.5" rims with no issue. Shorter sidewalls like 33" tires are a bigger issue, with a taller sidewall the angle is less, IMHO go for it. As others have said the worst that is going to happen is crowning, wearing the center of the tire sooner.

My understanding is that the alloys are about 25 lbs and the steelies about 45 lbs.

Big difference Nay .... woooooo

I bought some FJ Alloys ....

I will post some pics when I get them mounted, whenever I receive the wheels that is ....

if you have gone down the rabbit hole to fit 37s, you might want to get proper wheels for them assuming you are using the rig for rock crawling and such. Get 17 x 9 -9.5 Beadlocks for them and enjoy,

Ancient thread alert!

As one point of reference, I did run 33x12.5 on stock 6" fj60 steelies for a while and I didn't die. Handling was a bit on the sloppy side.
