I wanted to get some input on the service interval everyone is using for the 5-Speed Auto on the 120 Series.

I just had mine done by the dealer on my 2004 GX470 at the 100,000 mile service. $147.38 for (4) 00289-ATFWS, (2) 35178-30010 Trans Gasket, and labor.

I think the manual says every 120,000 miles.

The design of the 5-speed and the WS Fluid is supposed to go for the longer interval, but I wanted to see if anyone was servicing it more often.

Just did mine at 125k, I had no problems and they didn't report any to me at the dealer. I haven't heard of any problems with the transmissions on these trucks. You got a lot better price than I did.

Checked with the dealership, the bill was correct. They no longer use the flush machines to change out the fluid due to contamination issues and damaged transmissions. They only replace what comes out when they drop the pan.

I definitely will be getting this done more often, since I'm only getting 1/3 replaced.

Anybody else run into this on the transmission service?

Just FYI there is technically no service interval on the WS transmissions. They can check and adjust the fluid level. Or drop the pan and replace what fluid is lost. The refill procedure is complicated and the fluid level needs to be dead on. These transmissions are very sensitive. That being said, they have used the WS in trucks since 05 and I have seen very few problems out of them. Other than incorrect fluid level they run like a top. I have 2 WS vehicles and couldn't be happier with them.

Good to know. I have only put about 500 miles on mine since the flush but everything's going well. At least I've got the service record if any contamination issues arise, but they probably would have already. Also running the WS fluid, it's an 05.

It shouldn't be an issue. The fluid level and type of fluid are the most important. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thanks Sam.

This is my first WS transmission so I've got the whole old dog, new tricks thing going. The 4.7 V-8 and the WS 5-Speed is a match made in heaven.

I saw your post on your new 4-Runner, very nice.

Also, I forgot to ask you the last time I called and ordered parts for my LX, can you get parts for my GX?

Agreed. The 4.7 with the 5 speed is really nice to drive. We are loving ours. Well, my wife is loving it. She won't ever let me drive it.

I can get some stuff for the GX. Usually it's yes for mechanical and no for body. The drivetrain is basically the same as our 4Runner. Just let me know.

My 2005 LC 120 diesel D4-d Auto.
I went to my local Toyota dealer for an "all fluids change" at about 235,000 miles

He asked if I had any gear box problems, which I don't
He said, don't swap the oil, leave it, he said bring it back at 500,000 miles for the auto-box oil, or sooner if you get any slippage.
Now past the 250,000 miles, running like a dream.
And I pull a 2000kg (4000 lbs) 4 wheel caravan all over Europe.

nice!

You really want to do a complete fluid exchange to get ALL the fluid out. I did my 100 and 4R at about 90k at the dealer for $300 a pop. Well worth it although there was zero discernible driving difference - which is good.

So, you paid the dealer $300 for what?

Was it the dealer that suggested you change the fluid?

As you got no driving difference out of your truck, it begs the question, "why change it"

All GX 470's have the 5 speed auto right? Did they go to the WS fluid in 05 or were they doing this in 03?

Just curious for future consideration ;)

A complete fluid exchange. And as far as I'm concerned, no change in drive-ability is a GOOD thing.

It hasn't been very long ago that most dealers would try and sell the BG trans flush every 50k miles. My previous truck was a Honda Ridgeline (quit laughing at me) and Honda only recommends draining and refilling the pan (about 3 qts) and warns against flushing the tranny. A friend of mine at the dealer said they simply drain the pan, refill, drive and repeat until they finish off a case of trans fluid. It seems like these Toyota transmissions are pretty much bullet proof and unless you pull a heavy trailer or do serious off roading, they will last 200K + miles easily.

Not sure on the GX. All the Toyota trucks went to the WS in 05 except the LC. Most of the cars were phased in when the new body style came out (like the 07 Camry). The Lexus models are usually a little ahead of the curve though. I'd have to check on that.

Edit: Just looked it up on TIS. They went to the WS in August of 03. So the early ones had T4. The easiest way to tell is if there is a transmission dipstick or not. If it has a dipstick, it's T4, if there is no dipstick, it's WS.

2004, not 2005.
