Bose = consumer grade puke (no, I'm no opinionated)
Normally I totally agree... no highs, no lows... must be Bose!

But the system they put together for the 03 G35 Coupe is pretty darn amazing. I heard it for the first time last weekend and I was quite surprised she hadn't added an aftermarket sub.

That's why I clarified that in a follow-up post. Bose Car Sys = Sweet!

Oh my god....Cornwalls and Cornerhorns....I'm back to my youth!

I never grew up ...

After careful thought to employ monos, I took the simple way out and decided to drive them with a Yamaha DSP-A1G.... will move to 7-channel eventually using new Klipsch Heresy IIIs for center + effects.

Soon the rear panels will be opened for the first time... after twenty plus years of service, the crossovers probably need some TLC.

Amazing ... I can still get what I paid for these 25 years ago.

Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature + B&W Nautilus 802D with HTM1 and Velodyne HGS18.

It's a shame you decided to ruin that nice system with the B&W's.

Pioneer Elite DV-37 -> Bel Canto DAC -> Adcom GFP-750 -> Sunfire Stereo Amp -> Manepan 2.7QR's & Stereo Velodyne ULD-12s. All connected with David Saltz Wireworld cables.

Once you drink the planar Kool Aid and there is no going back.

This thread is definitely hitting its stride. :D

I'll chime in:

Sansui SP 1500s that my dad got while stationed in Japan, some Klipsch center channel speaker, Wharfedale Modus rear firing, Bose satellite cube things stolen from a previous employer, JBL Control 1.

Can you say piecemealed mess? :D

Man, this is crazy. I have a Yamaha DSPA1 also. :D

:D :D :D :D

I had direct/feflecting systems for years. Thank God that I can finally afford the B&W's (and for obvious reasons). (I don't see George Lucas using Maggies. :D )

I'm in good company...

My current arrangement in order as the appear in the Lovan rack:

Yamaha Tuner TX-950
Denon DVD DVM-3700
Yamaha DSP-A1 Gold
Monster Reference PowerCenter
Incoming Power: Dedicated 'hospital grade' circuit with isolated ground.

Speakers:
Klipsch Horns (non THX certified)
Mains: Cornwall I
Sub: KSW 200
Center: KV3
Front effects: KG1.5
Rear effects: KG1.5

Monitor:
Mitsubishi CS-35701

I'm an audiofile at heart and realize there are higher grade electronics, processors and speakers for music listening and HT.... I needed to go mainstream with the limited space and funds. Plus, I couldn't part with my Cornwalls, it would be like loosing one of the members of Pink Floyd. ;)

***Ah yes...good old Mitsi. Sold their stuff for years. 35's then the 40's...cool!

Haralious quote on the Floyd. :D The SACD of Dark Side is amazing!

Planar drivers are not a direct/reflecting system. You cannot compare a cone driver set up in a dipolar or bipolar radiation pattern to a large planar which loads the room much differently.

Re Lucas, Holsman and THX. Not, lucas has little to do with THX it was designed by Thomas Holsman for Lucas. There is actually a reason for this. I had an extended discussion with Thomas Holsman (the inventor of THX and a professor of Acoustics at USC) about using dipolar (specifcally planar and electrostic) radiators in surround systems about 10 years ago. Basically, I asked him, why when his specs specifically required that speakers have limited vertical distribution he wouldn't approve of planar or electrostatics which by their very nature are vertically controlled without the combing problems that multiple driver speakers have when set up to control vertical combing.

His response was that in designing the Home THX spec that they were aiming to have the sound as repeatible as possible, which meant having speakers that could be located close to walls. He agreed that planar's worked just fine, but they were concerned about consistant setup.

Note that THX does not give any guarantee of sound quality. All it does is say that X speaker will be capable of a frequency response, vertical and horizontal distirbution within certain perameters, and be capable of a certain DB output. The reason that you don't see home THX being a driver anymore is that most of the speakers that met these requirements really didn't sound very good.

THX is a valuable resource for theaters. There they make sure that theaters comply with specific initial requirements (sound levels, sound isolation, viewing sightlines, and many other items) and then continuously inspect these theaters to make sure they still comply.

The reason I give a hard time about the B&W speakers is, I have never liked the voicing on B&W's. They make a good product, but I find them to be overated. If I am going to use cone speakers, Vandersteens have much better voicing and imaging to me than any B&W (and yes I have listened to the big Matrix ones which have evolved to the Nautilis line). Call it personal preference.

That' why I like the Vandersteens as well.

FWIW, my old NHTs have amazing imaging, which is why I like them. I don't use them for music. Soundstage is incredible. With the proper acoustical treatment on the side walls, they easily expand the soundstage beyond the walls, well outside the room. Best bang for the buck in a home theater speaker I have ever experienced. Unfortunately, I think NHT was bought out and their speakers are no longer made in the US.

OK, gotta go, family's on me for doing email on Christmas.

Happy Holidays all!

What ever happened to the guy that asked the question about Rovers?

This thread has been officially hijacked.... :D

Now you just need some nice triode monoblocks to run those things. I have heard those Chinese ones for $200-300 each are actually really nice sounding. Listen to them the way that Paul Klipsch intended.

Cary,

Since you have technical insight, tell me more about Klipsch and the advantages of using Triode monoblocks... a friend (another technical expert) claims my Cornwalls will never reproduce music well due to the horns...

It's not the monoblocks that make the difference so much as running a nice simple triode amp. Triodes are very simple and low power (about 7-10 watts) but have this incredibly lush midrange. Klipsch speakers being very efficient are a good match, and most of the older Klipsch speakers were designed using Triode amps so you get to hear them as Paul originally intended to.

Horns in general are a love it or hate it proposition. Check out the high efficiency forum on audioasylum.com.

Okay, I'm bored again, so I thought I'd beat this dead horse some more even though the original poster hasn't returned.

Has anyone seen the movie The Family Stone??

My girlfriend and I went to see it earlier this week and I noticed the gay deaf son and his partner drives around in a brand new Range Rover HSE... obviously with compliments of FMC.

I remember reading an AP report (I posted herein) that Ford was targeting the gay community with Ranger Rover advertising through specific publications.. and was met with opposition from the moral majority. So Ford pulled the advertising campaign due to the ongoing negative publicity...

What's up with Rover and the Gay connection ?... I'm straight and always will be even if I bought a Range Rover.

I'm not homophobic... but, if Toyota started targeting a specific group to increase LC sales I would like to know what data led them to believe they were targeting the right group.

Opinions welcomed...

Edit: BTW... Happy New Year!

Maybe the gay guys heard that the Ranger Rover sucked and that got the ball rolling.

Every carmaker targets every car to a specific group. Toyota made an entire brand targeting young people since Toyota's demographic was so old- SCION.

They also specifically targeted affluent people with another brand- LEXUS

They also did specific targeting with the FJ Cruiser and the 100 fit a specific niche (tho not as well anymore, it is not new enough for keeping up with the Jones' lux crowd).
I can't think of one vehicle not not targeting a specific group...

Happy New Year!

I was looking for that one-liner that made sense of all this... :D

I wonder if Ford is planning on marketing their 'cross-over' vehicles to the transgender community ... :D

Happy New Year!
