Hey Crew - To summarize
Vehicle: 1998 HDJ101 1HD-FTE with a 5 speed Manual. H151F Trans. 110k miles on it.

Issue:
First noticed it after driving about 100 miles into my last trip - felt a slight repeating clunking noise as i got on the gas - would repeat faster as I increased vehicle speed. As I drove more on this trip, the noise got louder and louder , a bit more noticeable going UPhill and less noticeable going downhill- and I could feel it in the floor boards / wheel. I pulled over and got towed back home.

On the next day, cold started vehicle, drove it a few miles to a mechanic - no noises, no sounds. Had them check it out, was told I needed a new CV axle and inner / outer front and right tie rod ends. Ordered all OEM parts, had them replaced. After the work was done, picked up vehicle and drove it for the rest of the day - noticed no issues. The next day I was driving it and when I hit an incline and started going up, the sound returned. Again, only when i pressed the gas, seemed to be a bit noisier on right turns, then left. Drove it again the next day, after 5 mins of driving, noise was back as well - took it back to the shop. They spent some time trying to diagnose it - told me that the noise was coming from the transfer case behind the transmission and that I need a new transfer case... Said they put it up on the lift and ran it and were hearing a noise coming from the transfer case. This honestly shocked me a lot, as the rig only has 110k miles and was 1 owner before I got it. Also, these aren't really known to have transfer cases just " go-out" My confidence in the shop has wavered a bit, and I'm not sure how many 100 series they have experience on.

I wanted to ask here what you guys think. At the moment I'm going to change t-case oil, as well as diff oils and moly lube up the u joints.

I also will be taking it to a local land cruiser specialist shop in a few days for a second opinion.

Thanks for all your time and 2 cents on this!

Cheers

When was the last time that you had the drive shaft lubed?

That is definitely the first place that I would start.

The dreaded LC clunk. Both of mine have it, the ‘99 much louder than the ‘05. My ‘99 clunks loudest when I shift from F to R. Plenty of threads on this. Search is your friend. I used to hate it when people would tell me to search, but you’ll find multiple threads with a lot of replies. You’ll find more info that way than people will add here.

Like the above fellows said- apply a good synthetic grease to the drive shaft Zerks as directed- be careful on the rear, no to overfill the slip yoke. Also, do you get a clunk when stopped going from R to D? There's a bushing on the front diff that can cause a benign clunk when the shaft turns forward or reverse.

It's a 5 speed manual trans. I've read through a lot of the clunking threads. I'm in the process of greasing up the driveshaft joints / zerk fittings with moly grease. Will test tomorrow again when that's been done.

But to clarify: It's a repeated thudding / clunking sound that repeats faster as the vehicle speed increases. So if I press the gas when it's happening, I'll head. Thud thud thud thud thud. Let off the gas.. quiet. Press gas: thud thud thud thud thud. etc. Starts out light, and gets louder and more noticeable the longer I keep driving - per session. If I stop, and then let things cool off overnight or for a while. Process will restart again, with it being fine, then slowly starting to make noise again and slowerly getting louder.

And thanks for the replies so far. You guys rock!

Put a phone on the ground facing the undercarriage and video yourself shifting from R to D while on the brakes. If your axles rotate without the wheels moving, you’ll need some new hub flanges +/- axles. Mine clunks when hitting the gas because it loads up the drivetrain, the hub flanges are worn so there’s a R to D clunk when the car isn’t moving.

Have you figured out this issue yet? My 2001 seems to be doing the exact same thing and after replacing the CVs it's still there. I'm lost as the what the sound is. Seems to only happen between 5 and 20 mph. And is louder uphill. Inaudible when I let off the throttle. I'm lost

What condition are your spindle bearings in? When was the last time they were greased?

Hi. My 05 auto 100 series has this problem exactly how you describe it. Can you shed any light on this problem and a remedy? Would be hugely appreciated.
Cheers.
