  • Picture 6: I’ve never managed to remove the dead pedal without breaking the tabs. So going to buy a new one of those. I have always hated how that piece attaches.
  • I never removed the third row plastic interior panels. Instead, I cut the carpet with the paneling in so I could be sure the carpet laid exactly in the grooves.
  • Picture 7: I did the tailgate but forgot to put on the edging. Will I regret it? Trying to decide if I go back and put it back on.
  • Picture 8: The anchors in the back feel a little unfinished. Not sure if there’s anything I will do about that though.
  • Picture 9: I used one of those weird dog hair brushes (see picture) to comb the carpet. It got a lot of the loose fibers out and made it look better. Worth the $3.
  • New carpeting will make your speaker grills and leather look dirty. Clean them while they are out. I used diluted Super Green, then Griot’s Interior Cleaner, then Griot’s Interior Detailer (and sometimes 303 Protectant). Super Green was probably harsh, but I don’t think the PO ever cleaned this rig, and someone had spilled paint at some point. In the end, most of the pieces look decent. For the leather, I used Griot’s, but I’ll probably do a pass with Leatherique.
  • Picture 10: I found the carpet laid really nicely over the second floor hump once you got the first cut down the transmission tunnel right. So take your time doing that.

This was maybe the most rewarding money I’ve spent on my rig. Recommend it.

This is sweet! Did you thump on the floor before and after the killmat to see if it made a big difference? I’m not sure if this is a Lexus or not, but the Lexus has pretty good deadening. Thanks!!!!

FWIW, OEM carpet is still available.

How does it compare to the aftermarket stuff, e.g. Tupelo's and ACC's? I just had ACC's mass-backed carpet put in my 100 by the shop that redid the leather, and didn't see the OE carpet that came out.

The Lexus carpet is Lexus carpet. There is no aftermarket comparison, AFAIC.

No... I mean, objectively - how do the aftermarket options compare to OE, i.e. thickness of the pile, type of backing, thickness of the backing, etc.

IMO, and it's strictly an opinion, the Toyota interior finishes are far superior to any aftermarket material. They are made to last, aftermarket materials are not. The colors are more stable, the materials are easier to keep clean and the feel (the "hand" in fabric speak) is superior, due to the material used and the process involved in manufacture. I used to work for DuPont in their carpet fiber division, making the raw materials, not the finished products. I know what goes into making a good fiber and what cheap copies are. I also spent quite a lot of time with DuPont's customers, developing processes to manufacture quality carpets, in particular.

What I've seen from 80 and 100 series carpets rival the best DuPont ever created. It can be argued that aftermarket underlayment, available today, is superior in one form or another, but it wasn't around 30 years ago and it's only one component of the total assembly of an automotive carpet.

The best thing about the 100 series OEM carpet assembly, again IMO, is the value. You get an assembly made to fit your truck, with all the extras the Toyota designers included, the way they included them, for far less than an aftermarket carpet, with anything they aftermarket includes, which isn't complete, in contrast to the OEM designs.

I will say that the newer finishes are not as high quality as the older ones. Toyota is apparently willing to give the buying public what they are willing to accept. Take the rubber floor mats in every Lexus, for example. You can't even buy an OEM carpet floor mat for a Lexus truck. My 40 has a rubber floor mat.

I think the OEM carpet is in what 2 pieces(cargo area/third row and first two rows in one piece)?? Is there a part number and price for the OEM front carpet (1st and second row) ??? How about shipping ??? Thanks.

You need to search an online EPC or call your dealer to get that information for your year and model.
Here are the options for the 2000-2002 LX470 models, for example:

FWIW, this was $850 last week. Prices are apparently whatever they want them to be for the day.

I almost bought one then; now I almost wish I had.
