Hi All,

I have searched around and notice that everyone installing the H55 with the split transfer case has the parking brake assy on it. This then interferes with the FJ40 cross member. Also a new cross member is installed under the transmission connection to the bolt holes with the proper mounts.

I have said transmission and transfer case with parking brake. I also have the proper mounts, but no cross member.

My questions:

#1 If I remove the parking brake can I get away with not modifying my rear drive shaft?

#2 Do I really need the cross member under the transmission? I don't have one now... I know the 5 speed is a bit heavier but so much so that I need it?

Thanks.

No...You'll still need to modify both front and rear shafts....

TLC-

I was able to install an H55 w/o interfering with the crossmember with a V8 (although I ended up removing it after all and welding in a small support). If you are attaching to a 2F or F I think it's a VERY tight fit. There's a guy here in Diego that fabricated a pretty sweet removable crossmember (very stout) that I would like him to post up on MUD. I'll try to get ahold of him. Good luck.

I'm hooking it up to a 2F (3FE if I REALLY want to). I saw your post in all my searching and was planning on getting the early 80's FJ60 support or the FJ40 support. I just didn't want to if I didnt have to.

Anyone know what I need to do to remove the parking brake kit? I bought it this way so I don't know what it entails.

The park brake kit has a different output shaft, so its not as simple as it might seem.. Youd need to change it with a non park brake shaft.. Check out SOR# 068-100CB-Kit, might give some hints.. Theres other threads detailing installation of suck kit, so removal is reversal of installation?

If your not going to use the brake? I'll trade ya the parts needed to do the swap, or buy yours staight up.... but as mentioned, the shaft will have to be changed .......

If you want a crossmember for under your gearbox get one off a HJ60 or a BJ60, its that close in a match to the crossmember on a late model FJ40 it's not funny and just bolt it in place.

That's early '80s, correct?

Is it true I need to move the clutch to the other side? No one talks about that.

Depends on the year, but if you have a 2F, and a 2F bellhousing, the clutch slave will be on the right (passenger USA) side.

I was thinking of puting the eldorado disc brake conversion on it. It all depends on the $$.

I will need to have at least some of it installed for me since I have no way of cutting and welding. So the less work the cheaper it will be. I guess I have to weigh the options...

You best stay with the t-case park brake, for all practical reasons...

X2. The kit to add the brake is about $450 from Man-E-Fre. Money well spent on something else.

9/74-7/80 bellhousings have fork provisions for either side.....

I know. I was told I would need to move it to the other side. It's on passenger side now. Why would I need to move it?

Just use one of the housings mentioned and you won't have to......no reason to, unless you want to, I wouldn't....
