Hi all this is my introduction of my project 1992 FJ80. I found this rig on craiglist for $1700 with a busted transmisson, after all the help I got from this board I think I have isolated the problem to a stipped drive flange and talked the PO downt to $1400. After a 90 mile tow and $300 later it now sits in my driveway immoble. I currently have a Drive Flange on order.

Expense so far:

$300 Tow
$87 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser Repair manual
$54 Drive Flange
$8.79 for Beer
$20 Cleaning supplies and tire patch
$1400 For 1992 Toyota Land Cuiser
updated for December
$50 for tools, breaker bar and 54mm socket
$160+- for axle gaskets and seals
$12 more beer.
$400 used transfercase and used birf
Updated Feb 12

$120 for registration, (late PO)
$60 for Smog

BTW :flipoff2:

Here are some pictures of what a stripped drive flange looks like.

Notice the rounded teeth on the spline.:frown:

And the complete lack of teeth on the flange! :)

You suck! :flipoff2:

I mean that as a sincere compliment. ;)

Take a bit of peace from knowing that the flanges he ordered will probably only work for a while since the birf splines are rounded enough to tear up the new flanges he installs :).

Order some new or used birfs!!!

Unfortunatly it looks like the outer shaft is completly stripped too. I wont know untill rip it apart this week from looks of it though its dusted.l

Lots of early (short) 30 spline 80 birfs floating around...load up on some for $50 a pop and call it a day. No need to tear in before you make that call...I can tell you by looking that they are toast.

Yeh, all the advice I had so far was just for a new drive flange and I ordered one before I even bought the cruiser, I didnt event think to get new birf, but this one is fully F'd. Is it better to get a used birf or get one of those nice hardend aftermarked ones.

If you plan on wheeling it hard and driving on the road little the hardened jobs will save you money, especially if you step up the tires.

Looks like a good buy! Even came with a set of mid 90's 4Runner wheels.

Damn that thing has seen some wear and tear...but a good deal nonetheless for the money you paid. Now I know how much mine cost new in '92 seeing as we have all the same options ;)

Good luck with the build up. Will make a great trail rig that's for sure.

I've seen a lot of '92s with those wheels....mine came with them as well...I believe those were standard for certain options packages on that model year (but yes, same as the 4Runner wheels)

Great score!

Hey thaks all, looks like my first project is going to be a birf job for sure. I have been doing some reading and it seems like a pretty serious project. Il be sure to take lots of pictures and keep everone updated on it.
