So I'm not afraid to cut things off my wagon and when it came time for a friend to build me a "light as possible front bumper" he asked me how I wanted to protect the front part of the wheel well. My response was "I'll just cut that crap off..." and I have! In these pics the passenger side has been modified and the driver side has not yet. I wanted to reference them just so you could see what I cut.

This modification will significantly increase my entry angle since now the bumper will not need to go low, the bottom tube is going follow the line of the passeger side. That's a 35 and looking straight ahead you can see the top of the tire!

Note: AC dryer is inside the engine compartment on 91-92's so I didn't have that to worry about:D

There is definitely more to come in the next few days....
cut front fenders - whole wagon.webp
cut front fenders - grill only.webp

this is my tube bumper

and very nice might i add...
mine will have much less tube though. that bottom tube is about where mine is going.

I first cut across the top of the brace to free it from the thin metal using a saw-zall, then notched a V in the brace and bent it up. Then a few tacks and we're there.... saw-the rest outta the way.

maybe you can see in this closer pic...
cut front fenders - large.webp

Very well done, I like your approach. Post up the final bumper.

Somewhere, someone said "tube is your friend". Amen.

I dont think you will hit much over on the sides as they slope back. so this mod is a mute point. focus on keeping the bumper as close to the grill as possible as the front is where you will be hitting.

I disagree.... I will be cutting mine in the same way to get it out of my tire. Mine is already bent. Great mod.

Thanks. You wheel like me. I take things at an angle when possible to get tire on the rock first... not bumper.
Take a look at everyone's bumpers... they are scratched at the corners not the center even though the corners are higher.....

I love watching people take large obstacles from a direct point. Reminds me of the video I saw of someone crossing Golden Crack straight ahead and not angled.

Gotta see it! Post if you find it!

Love the ideas. I'm gonna go the tube route. No knocks on the ARBs or lookalikes, but I've always preferred the tubes. Pros- cost, weight, looks cooler...

Yeah it's funny, I'm searching on youtube for it, but found this which shows why this mod is not a moot point, a handful of approaches and still scrapes the wing...

I have a "Get Bent" video that has some early bronco owners wheeling in Katemcy. Even after the spotter tells the driver to go into an obstacle at the angle he still hits it straight on and ends up having to be pulled out backwards. Similiar obstacle to Golden Crack but it was on Waterfall Trail I believe.

Priceless:rolleyes:

Just goes to show, it's driver than rig. It reminds me of years ago, we were driving up to this glacier and there was a big ledge. A Defender 90 was ahead of us (V8 w/ goodies). The guy driving kept hitting the ledge straight on, going nowhere of course. His buddy got out to spot, and just told him to gun it harder. Somehow, they finally bashed their way up it. Next my buddy & I are in his stock little Nissan pickup with skateboard size tires on and a 4-banger...rolled right up. It was classic...
