It makes the front end of the 80 look like a Pug. I haven't decided yet if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'll get back to you on that one.

Are you going to be running a winch?

haha, funny.

I will be running a winch... someday. This bumper design could hold a winch, but not this one in particular. a slight modification replacing that bottom center bar with plate will do this, i just wanted tube down there.

Reminds me of my old bumper. http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135572&highlight=80+tubular
I miss that truck. I especially miss the bumper.

:eek:Dude! Great names and minds think alike! Had i seen this pic, we would have saved about a week of "thinking" prep. Is the top tube straight until the corners? or did it bend at the rails? Mine bends slightly at the rails.

And it's funny that you were after clearance just like me. I've had the Slee bumper and it was too heavy for me...

Whats a good way to contact this guy? See if you can get a price on that bumper plus a stinger a little more than frame width at the bottom that goes to about the hoodline.

Alky, post 38 should answer everything

Skimmed over that post, sorry about that. Looks like it fits my budget pretty dang perfectly, would be worth a trip down to auburn.

It was fairly straight on top. It had a slight bend in the middle that sort of matched the shape of the hood. Then it curved around on the ends. It was 2". The frame uprights were made of rectangular tubing that sleeved the frame horns. Originally I tried a hoop that matched the lines of the grill. It didn't work out so I cut it off. On an obstacle like Golden Crack I didn't even touch the bumper. Wow I just looked at the date on that. That was over 4 years ago. And I was full of BS, the rear bumpers take a lot more time and energy on an 80. I completely understand why people get so much for rear bumpers.

The guy who bent mine also made this rear bumper for NW-sickboy. http://picasaweb.google.com/jiborg/RandomCruiserStuff/photo#5030671013666535938

I did not think that I would like it as you were describing your project but now that it is a done deal it looks great. :bounce: Great work in design & fabrication.

That looks very good. Have you thought about painting the lower portion of the sheet metal on the truck (that is body colored), black? That would blend it in with the bumper.

I really like it!

I just painted it tan! Look at the first pics where the center was black...
If I keep this wagon very much longer it will be getting an OD green durabak treatment on the bottom where all the brown currently is...

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! I'm REALLY liking it. We're prepping for tubed bumperettes to match the front:bounce:

Looks great Brad, very nice work! Can I make a suggestion? For those looking for a more "finished" look, you could cover the openings with some plate steel. That would prevent from seeing the unfinished parts of the body behind the bumper.

Something like this:

bderks, you're right.. and the center was going to have steel plate for winch mounting until I decided this single bumper would never hold a winch. When the winch comes on down the road, I'll have Brad make another one for me.
