Sounds kind of dumb, but I have always used generic rustoleums and such and it looks good initially then falls apart after a few years and gets all rusty.. I think I am going to have these axles sandblasted, not interested in having the axles powder coated. Any recommendations?

cool. They are/ will be very well prepped. The front axle is ready to go already, the rear will be sand blasted. I don't want to spend too much time on these and not that important, just a good rattle can job and good to go but I want them to look decent and most importantly keep rust off.. .. I will try to track down Zerorust, is this something available locally? Home Depot? Seems like everyone has krylon and rustoleum only.. Thanks..

This is their website they should have a page talking about the prep for it..

http://www.zerorust.com/

I coated my axles with the same thing, got it from here

http://zero-rust.com/

I think CCOT carries it too

Good luck

PS do you think it would be competitive for a frame and such versus say powder coating in terms of durability and/or rust prevention? I was planning on having the frame powder coated but if zerorust can do a decent job then I would be willing to use it.. I am looking for extemely good and strong long term rust protection for particularly the frame. I have it all taken apart and down to the frame now, so I figure I might as well do it right while I am here..

Zero rust would work o.k. , but if you already have the frame naked might as well have it powdercoated..

Will look good for years to come too..

I did my frame with POR 15 but that was before the guy next door to me had an oven big enough for a frame

Two weeks after I finish the frame he comes over and offers to powdercoat it since he bought a bigger oven..

Has anyone used the Epoxy appliance paints on the frame and axels. ACE hardware, etc usually carries them in rattle cans?

Try pinnacle 330 High solids or other in the pinnacle lines from diamond vogel paints. Will need to be sandblasted 1st.

If you plan on modifing or making changes to your rig; any grinding or welding on the frame will only defeat the purpose of powder coating. In my case I can already see changes in suspension in a few years.
Lately I've been using www.rustbullet.com and have been pleased with the results. I can still wled on the frame and won't be concerned with losing the plastic coating; just throw another coat of paint on.
Just a thought...

use zerorust, you will not regret it, for about $100 you can do your whole frame, axles and undercarrigage if you buy a gallon. I used it on my 40, 5 years ago and it is still holding up strong, I have touched it up easily where I have grinded, etc on the frame with no problems. Plus, it is easy to work with and does not require the same type of ridiculous prep that por 15 does, just make sure you wire wheel everything and get it clean, then use their prep step or TSP from home depot.....

Has anyone tried any of the rust reformer products? That may be what POR15 is not sure. Was sort of thinking POR15 maybe contained phosphoric acid, which will turn rusty metal white. Never used so not sure. The rust reformate products turns all the rust black. These products contain tannic acid and this forms a complexs (reacts) with the rust (iron oxide) to form a stable iron tannate product. Found a web site from Texas A&M where they did some research. This is the method they use to preserve old artifacts such as Civil War cannon balls and such. Bascially it is a 2% - 5% solution of tannic acid and denatured ethanol. Once the metal is treated, and a "sealed" a hard black surface is formed, then I would think a good epoxy frame paint one top of the treated metal may work. Haven't really tried so not speaking based on experience.

I just got a 74 a couple of weeks ago (first project rig) and I am thinking of trying something like this. Looks like PO had previously undercoated at some point in time. Doubt any products work well on old undercoating. For best results would think most of that should be removed?? Any thoughts on that??

There are several of these rust reforomate products commercially available. Not sure every one has access to pure tannic acid to mix their own. Will try first on some good rusted pipe as a test. Of course I will remove as much of the rust as possible during prep.

How does sand blasting do with the entire body still on frame??

Guess that was my question as well ...once powdercoated... how easy is it to modify and not hurt the finish in that area? I know, I know.. so will anything but seems like PC would be harder to touch up when done.

Also, is PC really as strong in durability as POR, Zero Rust etc...? Just asking.

Good luck and post some pics.

Yes, Stronger...

actually I have to disagree here. I think zerorust will take more abuse from my personal experience. Powdercoating is strong but brittle and can be chipped fairly easily vs. zerorust which is softer and will take more punishment and will not chip as easily, plus you are able to touch up easily with a spare rattle can. For show trucks or nice restorations I would see that the powdercoating would look and be an overall better choice but for a trail truck a softer coating is better.

Hemmerite in a can. do not spray it on, use a brush. That stuff is fawking tough!!!

thank you guys I appreciate.. This frame for the most part will be modified once before powdercoat so I am not too worried about it. This is off a '93 FJ80 so it is already 13 years old (gulp). The frame factory powder coating held up very well with minimal rust over the time period here (but in a fairly low rust area - western Idaho near Washington / Oregon ) but the axle looks like crap more or less. Regardless there is enough rusdt on the frame to make me have enough desire to completely disassembe the frame (which I have now done) and the axles etc. The front axle is actually really clean. The rear not so much though. So I have powerwashed the front axle and whole frame actually and the front I think is pretty much ready to go minus a little cleanup first. The rear is super rusty. I think the plan is zerorust on the axles and powdercoat the frame. After all the mods and powdercoat first.. Again this is Utah where we have rust and really rough terrian so I really want this to hold up.. Now to find someone who sells it. I guess they cannot ship anymore?? thanks guys.. Andre
