i have a 68 fj40 and i want a roll cage, but have no idea on what i want, please give me some ideas, all the requirements are that it protects the rear fullsize jump seats (the ones that fit 2 people) and that it doesnt block all views. please give ideas and pictures

Go to the Home page (upper left corner), then hit Cruiser Cages link. ;)

My front hoop curves forward to connect to the "a" pillar and then to the slanted part of the floor. From the other side of the floor, it connects to the frame. What I like about this design is that your feet don't get hung up on the cage when you get in and out. HTH

do you have pic you could show me?

Call Mark at MetalTech or www.metaltechcage.com. He should be able to help you. He built me a custom 6 point cage and it's on its way right now. Great guy and he contributes a lot to the 'Cruiser community.

Here's a shot of the front connection of my cage where it ties into the dash. Some people really question the strength of this design but it's directly over (basically tied into...) the A pillar which is right over one of the main body mounts. It's actually a pretty strong location. Doesn't get in the way of your feet either.

I've seen an identical cage after a 3x roll in Moab and the cage and the dash shrugged it off like nothing happened. That was what made my decision to go ahead with this cage.

My only concern with that design is the load is on the bolts and their shear capacities. When mounted to the floor, the flange takes the shock load then spreads it out. Your's puts a vertical load on four bolts, in a slow, easy roll that's prolly fine, but in an roadway accident, I'm not sure that's gonna hold up IMHO.

I'm not sure I've seen a design that will accomodate your long jumpseats. I changed to the shorter jumpseats. SOR makes some standoff brackets they say you can use with the longer seats, but when you fold them down they're so close together, your knees won't fit. The Metaltech site is the way to go, quality and price.
Do you weld?
Ed

i need to learn how to weld, im only 16 at the moment, so im still new at this stuff, i was looking at metal tech site, but it gives a odd warning about not ment to protect, doesnt that mean it will crush like a tin can, or is it just so if you do wind up dieing, you cant sue them because they said it would?

You make a good point, but like I said before, the identical cage I saw that had a violent 3x roll and survived very well. Before seeing that cage I was just as skeptical of the design. Not too concerned about it anymore.

That being said, no doubt about it, a design that mounts to the floor and better yet, to the frame will likely be stronger but I am confident enough with this design that my wife drives it on the highway all the time with my two small boys and I know they're gonna be safe.

SandRider: the warning on the MetalTech site is just to protect them from someone sueing them in case they get injured in a rollover. I've seen the MetalTech cages and they're sweet.
