do you know the parts needed to make my parking brake dash indicator light work?

so, I have a 1974 fj40 with the parking brake pull handle right under the dash.

From what I can find on places like SOR or CCOT, there is a switch that goes behind the brake lever so that when you pull the lever, it depresses and sends a signal up to the light on the dash board. The switch is obtainable pretty cheap.

BUT, I cannot confirm exactly what it takes after that becuase places like SOR stop at the switch and do not show wiring or connections or parts from there up to the dash light. I see I need a switch, and I see the switch has some male ends on it, but then what exactly comes next? they seem to just stop there?

Currently, I have on my dash a red dome light that has a label below it that says BRAKE on it. behind this indicator light is..... nothing! there is no wiring that goes from that indicator light down to a switch on the pull handle.

What all do I need and do you have any of it?

I guess(?) I am looking for the switch AND the wiring AND bulb that go up to the dash indicator light so that when you pull the parking brake, the light on the dash comes on as a reminder.

"Wiring" will be in your harness, if it is not hacked to s***.... (ha ha ha) otherwise you will need to make it....not that big of a deal.

Do you have a TOYOTA FSM? Chassis and body manual? Will have schematics showing you how this is wired up. Pretty sure there are schematics out here in the tech links too...

Good luck!

look at a a schematic? are you high? you need a class in how to read those things just to look at it. if you do not know what you are looking at, it is like falling into the Matrix, then you need a pill to get out.

The only manuals I have are my old Toyota Fj specific repair manual and my Bible, and neither help in this case.

I would expect that my wiring harness is hacked to s*** thanks to the PO or PO's. BUT, I can always wire the needed pieces back in if it is not majorly technical as I can wire a stero for example. Problem is, I know I that switch, and I know I need a bulb, but I have no idea why finding what goes between them on SOR is impossible?

It is part of the vehicle wiring harness....

Look at the schematic...no I am not 'high'....and it really is not that difficult to get your head around. Take your time.

Is this keeping you from operating your vehicle?

Good luck!

Get a haynes manual and you will be able to see what you need. A switch and a light. mount the switch, connect to the light, on a 74 the switch is connected to the back up light hotwire (may be a plug that is hanging loose under the dash "in the wiring harness") Ground the other side. No problem

simple sounding. this I can totally handle.

BUT, I need the switch and wiring and light. where can I get this stuff? I seem to be able to find the switch that mounts behind the pull handle to trigger the light, but no wiring to go from that to the light nor the light and any other wiring itself. I am sure there must be a 'special' light and wiring setup to go from the switch (as there is a required switch) on up as the bezel indicator red lamp on my dash has a way to screw into it on the back, so it must mate up with that.

no no, but I just spent all this time fixing the parking brakes and such and find that I am forgetful about remembering that the brake is on and this truck IS strong enough to drive with the brake set and so, I just want that visual reminder to say "HEY!!! let off the parking brake".

plus, it would be 1 more thing on my rig to fix and make working and that makes me feel good and I know I can handle this repair as it is only a few pieces.

but, where to get the damn pieces is the question.

You also will need a test light to see if the plug under your dash has power....

thats the thing, there is no "plug" under the dash. you see, on the dash is a red bezel that COVERS a light behind it. it has been gutted behind that bezel. the red bezel and the BRAKES lettering are there, but there is nothing behind it (no light bulb, no wiring, no switch, no nothing). that is why I need those mystery/unknown pieces that attach to that bezel and go down to the switch at the handle and talk to the switch when handle is pulled.

what I really need is someone with a 74, with the pull brake, to either send me a phots of the pieces or sell me what they have. again, I can get the switch with the male ends that attaches to the brake handle, but from there up I do not even know what I need for pieces becuase no one has the diagram of the parts. wiring it into the harness is one thing and I can likely get there BUT I need the pieces before i even worry about wiring it up.

It is only going to be a plastic coverd female bullet-style connector, not some elaborate multi-pin plastic connector.......look for red/white stripe wire and blue/red stripe wire...look for power in the blue/red stripe wire....

well, here is the switch I need that attaches to the brake handle: http://store1.yimg.com/I/coolfj40_1861_14698271

this I can find cheap and used at SOR. see that it has 2 male ends on it. so, what do those male ends connect to? some wiring that must jump up to this dash bezel. so, once you jump up to that bezel, (1) where does the power to run this witch come in and is it part of this unknown wiring that goes from the switch to the bezel and (2) there MUST be some specific fj40 part that attaches the bulb to that bezel. on the back of the bezel are threads as though a bulb with a fitting screws right into the back of the bezel.

all this tells me there is (1) switch at handle (2) 2 wire wiring up to switch (3) bulb and adaptor to attach to bezel (4) wiring that goes to a power and ground source

it is weird to me that SOR has diagrams of every piece of these trucks. you can even find .o3 cent bolts and nuts and washers. BUT, their diagram just plain STOPS after they point you to the correct switch. they do not even show the switch go any farther up in wiring NOR show the dash bexel and light and bulb pieces I mention. see their diagram here: http://www.sor.com/shared/image/076B2.gif notice the 2 make ends just stop!!

2) this is in your harness.

3) yes, you are going to need a PARKING BRAKE bulb socket and leads, PROVIDED you still have the plastic piece retaining the red indicator in the dash.

4) this is in your harness.

Get a test light, and go look around. Unless someone was really into cutting the hell out of things, I would bet that the original connectors, two female plastic coverd bullet-style connectors are still there on the ends of the wires, and, I would also be willing to bet that one of them has power when the key is in the 'on' position.
