I'd like to introduce myself, New to this sight and a recent convert to cruiserholicism. I am billybongo63, proud member of the Cascade Cruisers in Portland Oregon. I joined the TLCA and it's Portland chapter when I purchased my '07 FJ Cruiser. After my first poker run, "Cruisin the Woods '06" I was hooked. I never ih my life met a group of guys (and gals) so friendly, down to earth, funny and just all around good. And boy can these people wheel! I've seen rigs that rival any to be found. Last week I picked up a rare old school cruiser, a 1963 FJ45 SW.
It's got a decent restore on the body and interior, but needs the drive train done. And herein lies my dillema:

My brain tells me to keep it stock and rebuild the 1F and original tranny/transfer/diff's.

My heart wants to modify it into a 4 Wheelin' Beast, with a small block, dual cases and at leat 37's.
So I am lookin forward to what allyou out there have to say, and thank you for lettin me be a part of your fantastic site.

Welcome.

I would find something else to build up and beat on...

That is a pretty rare truck bud.

On the wes side, Cedar hills. Thanks-Bill

yea... I wouldnt build that into a trail rig. It is much too pretty. Plus Poser says its rare and well, so far Ive never seen him be wrong, so I'd go with his opinion and look for something else to beat on, with the sound of what you want to build all you really need is a frame, partial tub (rust weight reduction) and axles. That shouldnt be too expensive or difficult to find.

You might want to post this in the FJ45 sub-section.

That's definitely a rare find - I think you would be nuts to modify it much, and doing so will kill the market value at a minimum. I'd suggest staying with the stock drivetrain and keeping the mods to the easily-reversible kind.

X2. Thats a nice 45. :) Beat on the FJ and keep this one stock with mild mods for the Sunday driving and light wheeling.

Somebody's gonna post up that it's your truck and do what you want, but you just plain don't see Cruisers like that anymore. There were very few SWB produced to begin with, and 40+ years later there are even less of them on the road. That's a lick away from a museum piece and to retain the history would be greatly appreciated in the Land Cruiser community.

A trail truck can usually be found in the form of something that has been used and in some cases abused at some point, and has a dead engine (like mine might be ). These can be found for cheap and are in comparison all over the place compared to what you have. BTW that's probably worth $$ the same as 2-3 trail trucks, at least in my mind.

The '66 FJ40 I'm building is far from stock, so I'm not a cruiser-purist, but that thing seems too rare/nice/old to change up. Then again, its your truck, do what will make you happy. Poser probably has the right answer... get another one to mess with how you see fit.

Take the $$$$ for a new drivetrain and buy a trail rig for a few thousand. I'm no purist but that looks great as-is.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Beautiful truck! Keep it stock and both your heart and your brain will be happy. Find something else to beat up.

Oh, and welcome! :flipoff2:

x6.... Save it. That truck is extremly rare, especially in that condition.

One option is to upgrade to a performance 2F... I swaped from a 1F to a 2F in my '55 and didn't modify any motor mounts, etc.

You could dump $5-$6k into a smoking 2F motor:D

Welcome.

x7. If that thing shows up as a trail rig.. we might have to excommunicate you! :D

Very very nice rig.

Find another 45 body and then an 80 - WOW

Good luck and welcome!

Cruisers are meant to be used and abused, but not that one. ;) She's a beauty. Throw some 33x9.5's on it, and enjoy it.
