My 80 got her period today. Started the 80 to warm her up, came back out 5 minutes later and a pretty decent sized red puddle right under the front bumper. Knew right away it was PS fluid.

Popped the hood- the entire front of the engine is dripping, as well as the hood. I found the leak, but now the system is empty.

Just my luck, I sold my 60 a couple of weeks ago, and the 80 is the only vehicle we have right now!

Question is: am I going to damage the PS pump by running it dry until I can get a new hose put on? I HAVE to drive the rig.
 
I wouldn't run the pump dry. Don't think I'd drive the truck under non emergency circumstances without power steering either. Probably time for a rental.
 
Definitely don't drive it with the belt/pump spinning.

On the other hand, whether it's ok to drive it more than a short distance with the belt removed is a perfectly valid question. It'll of course be very hard to turn the wheel, but will it hurt anything? I dunno. Logically, the only parts it could hurt would be anything from (and including) the steering gearbox back up to the steering wheel, since those are the parts now getting more stress. I know several 62 series owners (power steering but not AWD) who have done this for extended periods of time (basically just to cheap to fix it), but haven't heard any such stories from 80's owners. Maybe a few will come out of the woodwork? :D

FAT ATTACK! (Blue shirt on his head.) I think that's the only other one I saw. Funniest/cutest thing I've seen in a long time.

So are you going to try driving it? I honestly considered driving mine to work when my pump went out and I was waiting for the new one.

Well, I drove it the mile down the street to Target earlier, it was a real bear. But I'm not going to chance ruining that PS pump any further. It'll sit in my driveway until Monday morning when I can take it in to the shop... Unless I can coax myself to take the belt off the pulley.

It's frickin' cold outside right now though.
 
with no fluid the pump will be destroyed in a short period of time.

if there was a belt to disconnect that would work, steerign would be stiff but pump woudl be safe and hopefully there si enough fluid left in the box to keep it lubed, only problem is on a 93 (through 97) there is no PS belt, the pump is direclty gear driven off the crankshaft.

so you are dead in the water until you can get it fixed and filled.

Crap.

I'll have to look into swapping it out myself tomorrow then. Because the shop is about a mile and a half away. (or is that not enough time to kill the pump?)
 
I'd fix it tomorrow or flatbed tow it on Monday...

figured that was the case, I have done the reverse in the past, given wrong advice to FJ80 owners because of diffrences,

agreed

not sure exaclty how many miles you could make it but but not many, I would not have started it much lass have driven to target.

Edit:

the pump may already be damaged, watch for noises, internal leaks into the crankcase and external leaks after you get it fixed.
 
It blew after I started it, not before.

I guess I didn't think the PS pump would go bad so quick, 2mi round trip?

How do I check for PS fluid in the oil?

fast moving loaded metal parts will destroy eachother in very short period of time without lubrication.

if you loose PS fluid and make oil then you have PS fluid in your oil.
 
And I suppose the PS pump is a pricey part too, 'eh? Great.

Someone please kick me in the nutz.
 
Over 300 bucks for a pump. You probably lost the return hose that connects to the gear. I bet it let go at the bend. Toyota does not sell that hose loose. You have to buy the PS cooler assembly. I found a Previa hose that has the proper bend in it and it can be cut to fit. You can also get some 3/8 transmission hose and use a section of that. The down side to that is the fact that 3/8 is tighter than hell to jamb on the lines and there is no moulded bend. That is what I used at Moab last year when my hose popped on Kane creek.

I wonder if Oreily's has anything that will work. I suppose I can do the 3/8 tranny hose thing until I get a proper fix.

Believe it or not, I take no pleasure from calling that spade.
3/8 transmission hose works but it is a fight getting it on the steel lines. I fought it hard and I did not like it. Changing that hose is unpleasant and the fewer times the better. If you need the vehicle "now" I would suggest getting some 3/8 transmission hose and some worm drive clamps (the stockers will not work because there is not enough wall thickness) and using that. I have a Previa hose in stock and I can ship Monday. It will be a lot easier to install the hose if you remove the battery and battery box to do so. IF you can wait it would be better to do it once, with the proper diameter hose. I did it three times. Once with a donated PCV hose to get me off the trail, once with 3/8 trans hose to get me home from Moab to Albuquerque and finally with a proper formed hose. I'd pass on the first two if you can.
