i think my fuel pump bit the big one this morning on the ride to work.
seemed like it ran out of gas, engine died, still in gear coasting down from 55mph, it fired back up at around 45mph. stepped on it to get back going, everything was fine for about 15-20 secs or so then repeated the above.
was able to nurse it along in 2nd with less than 25% throttle, anything more and it acted like the carb bowl would run dry.

get to the shop and pull the fuel line off the carb, and crank it over, have a full line worth of gas spurting(not a strong spurt though) out the line.

next put a pressure gauge in same line, get about 4psi from a toyota mech pump. does'nt seem like enough.

what kinda of pressure should a mech pump put out?

are toyota rebuild kits available for the pump? it IS a TEQ pump.

rebuild kits for up to 78 I think, newer no kits

I sudjest the Carter brand fuel pump, it will be a new OEM Deski(?) part in the box, about $50 vrers $100 for dealer, same part.

i have a no name coming from advanced auto parts to get me by. it's a 1/77.
ccot's site said they sometimes have these rebuild kits, i have an email to see if they have one.
this pump is only 3-4 yrs old(new from toy), so i'd like to "try" and redo this one.

Hey Pimp....I need to pick up a new pump today. What parts stores carry the Carter? 12/78 production 40 so I have the weird one.

got mine at the local Westbay they are just a local small chain. I think Napa can get them, recall Butch use them also.

Forget the brand of the one I got for my 77 2F, it was also an AIsin, but I had to make some bootyfab fittings, I think it was a PO issue not a fuel pump issue.

The pressure sounds fine, it need to be between 3.5 -4.7 psi if i recall, thats what it is on the 72' the 2f mightbe higher but a carb dose not need to a whole lot of psi.

are you out of Gas? I only ask, cuz I have done it.

O'Reily carries Carter. I ordered one last night.

If you have 4 psi, then you don't need a new fuel pump. It's doing fine. Look somewhere else for your problem.

If you think it's fuel related, check downstream from the fuel pump. Do you have an in-line filter that may be clogged between the pump and carb?

Side Note: Every time I think I have a fuel delivery problem, it turns out to be ignition related.

Good Luck,
James H

Fuel pressure sounds ok to me too. When was the last time you drained the tank? If it's been a while, I would try putting an air hose on the delivery hose from the tank, blowing back into the tank to break debris loose from the pickup, and then drain the tank.

Unless you just want to buy a new pump because it is shiny!

plastic tank :flipoff2: that had all that done before the install.
my parts house actually sold me a TEQ pump, that had the teq milled off, for 30 bucks. the way it was acting leads me to think it's a pump issue. ive run it out of gas (several times, as the gauge doesn't work) so i know it has gas. when it's out of gas, it's OUT of gas.
it will idle and run with little throttle input, however not under load or at speed.

at this piont we're going with a pump, if it's not that then we look else where.
at this time i'm looking for a quick fix, what with the nasty weather "they" say we're in for this weekend.
