Looks great! Much more stout mounting, but what is keeping it from sliding side to side? The pressure of the 6 Yakima clamps?

Yes. I used 4 to hold it with the old mtg system, just clamped them down next to the mounts. But the tent would act as a slide hammer and off road would keep knocking them around. Hopefully 6 will have enough pressure to make it stay put. We'll see, going to moab this weekend to "test".

I used pipe clamps on the outside of the original mounting plates and the same thing happened, after some time it eventually beat the clamps side to side.

another reason why I went with my custom bars and through bolts

Quick question...

Since I plan to pick up the ARB type full length rack with the side rails for my roof rack - is it possible to mount a RTT so it opens towards the BACK of the truck?

I haven't seen pictures like this yet, and I imagine it would be slightly wider and stick out a bit on each side.

You could if there was a way the mounts on the tent would line up with any cross bars, Then again it is almost 6 feet wide and would stick out 4 inches or so on each side of the rig.

I thought about doing this because I'd actually prefer it to open that way but is is way to wide for my comfort. 72". I'd bend it the first weekend out. It's hard enough to keep the 66" yakima bars out of the trees.

What is the 72" measurement?

The tent itself seems to be 47" x 55" closed....and 94" x 55" open/unfolded.

If the ARB rack is 49" wide, wouldn't that be 55-49=6 inch.....so 3" overlap on each side?

It is at LEAST 72" long, I have one in my garage and that is what the measuring tape says.

Are you looking at the new 2007 model?

Rezarf <><

Yes, unfortuneately it was a confusion between the 07 model dimensions and the old group buy style. 72" wide would be too wide to go on top. If the ARB rack is 49" wide, that would leave 11.5" overhang on EACH side. :(

I have been using the mombassa tent now for a few months. It has been good for the price. The other night we were camping and as I was setting up the tent the temps were dropping faster than I thought they would be and the forcast for the early morning was rain (two things that this tent isn't the best at dealing with). Popped the mattress out of the tent, folded it in half along the seam with the velcro facing inwards and it fit perfectly between the wheel wells of the 60. It was comfortable and beat trying to test out my ground tent's rainfly on the roof-top-tent. I would rather try that out when I am at home or it is day time and I have nothing better to do.

Just picked up a slightly used Maggiolina Airland for cheap and took it out for a trial run last weekend. I love it! What a great tent. It's the medium size so lots of room for my wife and I. You hardly notice it when driving. It open fast and easy and is very comfy inside. If your considering one, you wont be disapointed.

What's cheap? Like to know how a used Maggiolina compares price wise to a new, albeit last year, model Mombassa.

$1400, a little over half price (new Maggiolina Airland is $2200 plus $200 shipping). Not "cheap" really, but relative to full price, a good deal IMO.

Cheap is in the eye's of the beholder. Try days in fog/rain/sideways snow, 50+mph winds, 3 weeks+ of no campgrounds, ice cold sleet camp set up, late night stops, mosquitos, bears, snakes, scorpions, and last, but not least, spousal comfort :) I know I won't be without until - heaven forbid, it becomes a trailer queen, but since I don't play the lottery, that won't be happening.

thanks guys,, will keep you posted

Hi there. This is my first post on this forum but I've been following the thread on the car-top-tent. I emailed them the other day about the 2007 tent and was directed back to ih8mud.com by Mel for more info. Except that there doesn't seem to be any info on here about this new tent yet.

I'm looking for a rooftop tent and after reading the comments about the old one I think I'd rather spend the money on an Eezi-Awn or Hannibal or something and know that I have a tent I'll be happy with for a long time. Much of that has to do with the spousal approval factor. She's not as big a camper as I am ... I generally just slept outside before ... so I'd rather spend more and have a tent she'd be happy in than spend less and have her not enjoy herself.

Does anyone know how these new tents compare? I'm looking for something that's bug proof and will hold up for many years. If I can get that for $650, great! If not, I'm off to spend more elsewhere I guess.

If anyone has any more info or experience on these tents, I'd really love to hear it.

Thanks!
- Andrew.

P.S. I love Land Cruisers so as far as I'm concerned it's all love from me. It just so happens that I love Land Rovers a little more ;)

I got a response back from mel about buying the new style ladders. He said they should be available by the end of april for those who are interested. Anyone up for a group buy if he gives us a deal?

I found some more detailed photos here. but i still have not seen a write up on one yet. This is another thread that has some talk about it.

Thanks for the info and photos. There are some good comparisons to the Eezi-Awn too, which I think is the front-runner for me right now. I talked to a distributor in South Africa and can probably shave a couple hundred bucks of the price by buying from them, if I decide it's worth it. I'm going to keep following information on this tent too though because, well, it IS a lot cheaper!

Drew, there's a guy in Vancouver who still has some tents they designed a bit back but decided to not continue production. C$1000. He's pretty well known in the Land Rover community for making a highly regarded overdrive, parabolic springs, and a few other products. www.roverdrives.com . Of course, being on the other side of the country I'd have to buy that one sight unseen too.

I got one of the first in the group buy from Mel. Used it for the first time at Roundup 1.5 weeks ago. The first night, I noticed it was bending. Second night, it broke as I was getting up into it. Not happy. My family slept in the car that night.

Dave G was also breaking his in that weekend on his M101 trailer. The difference between his and mine was that his tent was about 4.5 feet off the ground, not stretching the ladder. Mine was on my BJ70, which has a lift and sits on 33's. It was about 6.5 feet high, as I could walk underneath it and I'm 6'3". There was more pressure on a smaller piece of the ladder, unlike Dave's, where his was spread out.

I am going to take pics and send an email to Mel and try to get an upgraded ladder. I am almost positive Mel will make right in this. I'll keep ya posted on what happens.
