Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

I installed the box and everything seems to be fine. Apologies for not reporting back sooner, I just wanted to get a few more kilometres on the box before I reported back, but the COVID restrictions and life in general have meant that I have not been able to drive it as much as I would like...

Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

No dramas, happy to share my journey. Hopefully it is useful. Best of luck with your build also! I will post back once mine is up and going :)

Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

As far as the actual year goes, if you have/know about the vehicle it came out of, then you can do what BrendanT suggests (this is what I did). If you don't know about the vehicle but you still have the original transfer case attached then you can use the numbers on the transfer case to find the...

Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

The easiest way to tell if it is an early or late one, without pulling it all apart, is to check what input shaft bearing you have. Pull the cover off and if the bearing is sealed it is a later one (post Oct 1985), if it is not sealed, like below, it is an early one (pre Oct 1985).

Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

After much reading on the forums, and alot of help from All Four x 4 Spares here in Australia, I just decided to buy the new one (33421-60060). The main difference from what I could see is that first gear on the layshaft has a chamfer. See below. The main issue with this is that it clips the...

some h55f and split case tech

Are you worried about the output shaft of the H55 or the output shaft of the transfer? Looking the part number for your box it is mated to 2H or 3B not an xF engine. Would be worth confirming if the input shaft is the same for the xF series engine as the 2H, I am sure there are threads on...

some h55f and split case tech

Thanks! Very interesting...I'll take a look at that, twice the price of the later one, but the first place I have seen that stocks the older one in Aus. Would still like to work out the differences, though.

some h55f and split case tech

I certainly have, I called them and they told me that they (and Toyota) no longer manufacture the older pre 10/1985 lay shaft. Below is an extract from their site only showing the newer one... Looking at Transmission Gear (Mtm) for 1984 - 1987 Toyota LAND CRUISER FJ62 | General sales region...

some h55f and split case tech

I have an early H55F (6/1985) in my FJ62 and I am struggling to source a new layshaft (33421-36040) here in Australia. I have a couple of questions, what is the difference between the early layshaft (33421-36040) and the later, post 10/1985, layshaft (33421-60060)? Are they interchangeable? If...

    Hard "downshifting" when hot H55

The same thing happend to mine when I tried to replace the rubber hose. I ended up replacing the whole thing from the master to the slave with SS braided line. Got the line made up at the local hose and fitting place, works a treat. The SS braided line does feel mildly more direct than the OEM...

Early vs late H55F lay (or counter) shaft

Hi I am doing up my early H55F gearbox (built 6/1985) and would like to replace the lay (or counter) shaft. According to my research my gearbox is an early pre oct 1985 box and requires the early type lay shaft (33421-36040). Problem is I cannot seem to source one, I have called a number of...
