The easiest way to tell if it is an early or late one, without pulling it all apart, is to check what input shaft bearing you have. Pull the cover off and if the bearing is sealed it is a later one (post Oct 1985), if it is not sealed, like below, it is an early one (pre Oct 1985).

Are you worried about the output shaft of the H55 or the output shaft of the transfer? Looking the part number for your box it is mated to 2H or 3B not an xF engine. Would be worth confirming if the input shaft is the same for the xF series engine as the 2H, I am sure there are threads on...
