    1970 FJ40 Transfer case rebuild

Last night my new transfer case housing and rebuild parts arrived from Georg. He was helpful over the phone, as this is my first time rebuilding the transfer case. I'm sure he could help you figure out what you'd need, and he's got the parts. Georg @ Valley Hybrids @ Cruiser Brothers Shop...

    Transfer Case Identification Help Needed

Mostly correct! A non broken bolt got squeezed between case and idler, cracking the case from the inside out.

Good guess, but that wasn't the failure mode.

    Transfer Case Identification Help Needed

Good question. I don't plan on wheeling it very hard, so no I won't be. And... I'm pretty sure the t-case saver and nose rings wouldn't have helped me in this situation. Here's pictures of the evidence. I know what happened, can anyone else figure it out? Here's a hint, it's a bit embarrassing.

There's only an "R" stamped there?

I think you are right, I see it now, no ribs on the boss around the idler shaft. Perfect, thank you!

    Transfer Case Identification Help Needed

Thanks, I had reviewed that, but didn't help me much. I couldn't make out the difference between the early 70's and later 70's cases. So I'm not sure what I have. Unless someone else's eagle eyes can point it out to me.

    Transfer Case Identification Help Needed

I'm trying to identify the year of my transfer case. I know it is not the original transfer case. The case is cracked and I am intending on replacing it with one from a 1979 FJ40. I'm trying to make sure I can just switch everything over to the 1979 case, and trying to determine which rebuild...

Son hit a deer, trying to figure out what is bent

It was the knuckle/spindle. The thin part that already has a bend to it as it goes up towards the upper A arm. It bent at that location. Had it replaced along with the ball joints. Seems to be all good now, although it was done by a local mechanic, so he only did a tape measure alignment. It's...

Son hit a deer, trying to figure out what is bent

Thanks, I did look at the cam bolts as suggested by @BMThiker . They had not spun over the tabs. Though the front one looked like it might have shifted just a small amount.

Son hit a deer, trying to figure out what is bent

Well that turned out to be a waste of a day. Alignment shop said they can't tell what is wrong with it. They would just start replacing parts. They said I should take it to an auto body shop instead. Looks like I just might report it to insurance and let them deal with it...

Thanks for the offer! I've got an appointment for alignment on Monday. Will see how it goes

Son hit a deer, trying to figure out what is bent

Good point. It did cross my mind that it could have already been like due to something else. My wife hit a well head with our suburban and bent the frame, alignment shop did the best they could, but said that one side was back 3/4"... You just never know with a previously owned vehicle

Son hit a deer, trying to figure out what is bent

@ Okay, this makes more sense. I'm not exactly sure where you are talking about, but I should be able to see that it spun?

Sounds like I need to take it in. I kind of figured that, but it's a couple hour drive and I'll need to trailer it.
