Lacking more specific suggestions, a good place to start is with boating / marine systems. The environment is harsher and the cost of failure is higher than for most land-based vehicles, so the marine industry has worked things out very well. Boaters have the same problems as overlanders- low...
Let us know how the WRX fit you. I am especially interested in the seat cushion height!
The Planted brackets look great- very sturdy, and with a couple of 1/4" steel bars to catch wider rails I think you could easily mount anything onto them.
A quick follow up on the Range Rover L320 seats I bought- they are too tall! I test-fit the passenger seat on top of a Planted bracket. I am 5'10" with a long torso and short legs. The seat has me perched up so high that I would have to pull the seat really far forward just to reach the pedals...
Thanks for the comments. I would like a little more information about the switches. For some reason I could not follow your link to a specific thread (?). I am hoping I can just hook up power to pos. and ground, which I think are the fat black and brown/purple wires going into the main RR seat...
I just installed a pair of Polk DB652 speakers in the front. The original pancake set was inoperative. I took advantage of one of the last +50 degree days here in Wisconsin to install some sound deadener inside the door. The Polks do not fit in the original factory position very well- they need...
Yes I did. I had been looking as far afield as Denver and Seattle to avoid the Wisconsin rust syndrome. When this one came up 4 miles from my house I thought I should jump on it.
It needed a lot of work, which I knew going into it, but then it needed a lot more work after that. Just got it back...
I am wondering if there is a more or less standardized approach for adding electrical components to a J80.
For my 3gen 4Runner, there is an approach that has become standardized by trial an error for adding relays, fuses etc. to support additional electrical items- lights, winches, heaters...
I need a new passenger side mirror. Wondering about the quality of non-OEM mirrors that I see on Ebay for around $50. The used OEM versions seem to go for $100-$150. Is this because of the cachet of OEM, or are the new knock-offs poorly made and I will regret buying them?
I had a set of Cooper Discoverers on my 4Runner, and they were pretty loud, which I could have put up with, but also pretty bad on snow and ice. Even though they had aggressive looking treads, the rubber compound could not get a grip when it was cold. I was really happy to trade them out for a...
TTT=Trailer Top Tent. Further back on the rig than a Roof Top Tent. That looks like a lot of canoe sticking out the back but it who I am to argue with actual experience? I love the idea of a low profile tent on top of a trailer, with room for a couple of canoes below.
