I've replaced mine with a steering wheel from ebay. I like the way it feels and looks, even though color didn't exactly match. One problem is that after a couple of months it developed a slight play in the area where wood grain part attached to the steering wheel (10 and 2 o'clock), so I do not...
Apart from this noise I'm happy with my GX, so I don't mind repairing it. So far I've done most of servicing myself, but I'm afraid rebuilding tcase is beyond my competence level. Is there any simple way to replace tcase output shaft or does it require opening the tcase which obviously requires...
Yes, correct, the noise went away without the front driveshaft. Is there any way to check whether transfer case front output shaft is bad or not? If I were to repair it, should I look at full tcase rebuild or just replace the front output shaft and bearing?
Forgot to update the thread: did a transmission service since my last post - replaced ATF (3 drain and fills) and filter (strainer). The filter was not clogged or contaminated, no metal shavings were found on the magnets. The whine / howl hasn't changed since the service.
Thanks kmchuk for advice. I ruled out wheel bearing as well as belts/alt at the time I was troubleshooting it. The only thing that completely eliminated the whine was front drive shaft removal and driving with rear drive line only.
After troubleshooting it for a few weeks I came to a conclusion...
I bought mine around half a year ago. Drives just fine and I'm generally happy with it except that I noticed a drive train whine a few days after the purchase. If I had noticed it during first initial test drive I wouldn't buy it. Changed all diff/T-case/Tranny fluids and the whine is still...
Showed the video with the noise to one mechanic (not specialized in toyota/lexus) and he said that he had seen a similar noise on a Mercedes and the the noise was fixed by replacing the clogged tranny oil filter. I'm wondering if it would make sense trying doing this on my GX470.
Looks like on...
Hmm, interesting. Then I guess mine developed it so early at 100K because the previous owner never changed diff and tcase fluid. I thought some 4runners and fj cruisers have very similar tcases and transmissions. I wonder if they develop similar howl/whine over time.
Just got the GX back from the dealer. They said the noise was diagnosed by 2 different technicians and it's most probably from tcase or transmission. They said that they also test-drove another '06 Lexus GX for a comparison and said that the other GX also produced similar whining noise, so they...
Went to Lexus dealer for a service on a safety recall this morning and left the vehicle there, also asked them to diagnose the noise. Let's see what will they recommend. Will update the thread.
That sucks. When you guys say gear, do you mean the differential or tranny and tcase?
Btw, this truck has no lift, stock tires, all driveline original, only 110K miles.
Thanks Dan and Arailt. I think you are right, this explanation and and cause sounds right to me. The whine is pretty annoying and it's more loud in reality than on the video. I have completely stock vehicle with Michelin highway tires. I never towed with it, but the previous owner might have...
