My 97 was showing similar symptoms. After much troubleshooting, found the the engine harness near the EGR pipe was toasted & some of the wires were touching each other when engine was under load. Replaced the engine bay wiring harness & everything was peachy from then on.

Hi George Here is a better pic of the red/orange coolant leak. It appears to be from the worn out o-rings at nipple at the bottom of bypass pipe. I hope there is enough room to take the two bolts & wiggle out the bypass pipe.

Thanks for the quick reply. Appreciated I can see removal of thermostat be easier but I was wondering about the bypass pipe that attaches to the side of engine block hidden be the supercharger.
