I always tell people it's the best of the terrible options. It's WAY better than the Grom.

Is it the LC hiss or just a ground loop hum? If it's a hum, you can just get a ground loop filter and put it inline, turn the amp gain down, and check for good continuity from the amp all the way back to the headunit. Alternatively, you can use an optical signal from the headunit to the amp.

Any amp should work. Aim for something that fits under the front passenger seat. I also highly, highly recommend you choose an amp with digital input to avoid any potential ground loop problems.
