It may not be. I agree that it looks homemade. Though some parts of it have nice looking edges so I can’t tell. Could have been for something else that was ‘converted’ 😁
Anyone have an alternator bracket for a ‘77 BJ40? Not sure if it’s the same as the FJ bracket or not. Mine looks as though it’s been rewelded several times over the years.
Timing cover, new water pump, rad, and everything else is back on.
Finally found a gear reduction starter from an early ‘80s Cruiser that has me up and running.
Snagged the starter on eBay (though @crawlin cruiser had several he could have hooked me up with). I had to swap the 11 tooth gear...
Hey @stevebradford, we did not, but after removing the starter it looks like you're exactly right. Though we took it to a starter guy this morning who said he needed an additional part(s) to swap the 9 gear with the 11....I haven't dug through that forum link you sent me but I will later today...
Update: got an early 3B starter that works and fits. However, when we tried to crank her up tonight, the starter isn't engaging the fly wheel. Teeth of the flywheel seem to be good. It sounds like the starter is just spinning so I'm wondering if the bendix is stuck or not coming out far enough...
@stevebradford i am eternally great full for that thorough response. The three different starters explains why I’ve been getting different responses from different folks and clears up a lot for me. I will try another starter shop to see if they are up for rebuilding the current one. Sounds...
Timing cover removed. The inside looked pretty good! Searching for a replacement gasket (or making one from gasket paper). Ordered a new timing cover seal from Cruiser Outfitters. Seemed to be leaking from the seal.
Rented a harmonic balancer puller from Advance Auto, but it wasn’t big enough...
Good to know. Tried CruiserOutfitters first. They didn’t have a starter and actually said to check with CruiserParts...but again, I’m still learning.
Thanks for the 411.
@Onur yeah that’s what it really seems like.
the guy I emailed with a couple of times assured me it would fit. He then told me that even though they looked so different (I sent him pics) that the nose cone would swap...not sure what to do other than take a few screws loose and send him more...
@Mr Cimarron Sounds like a similar situation. I tried to fit the starter to the holes/bolt and it wouldn’t fit because it hit the block. Felt hopeful that I could swap the nose cone from the ‘original’ to the new one, but it doesn’t look like they’ll interchange. Figured I’d start taking them...
I can’t say 100%, but the engine block number seems to be from the same period. I’ll check the plastic/electrical parts. Thanks for the tip.
Yeah! That would be great. Let me know please. Thank you!
