So after rebuilding an 80 series steering box and reinstalled it I found a lone ball bearing!
So it must only have 43 balls in there. Is this a problem and should I pull it apart and put the last ball bearing in? Eg will it cause “slop”?
Pain the ass!
Cheers
If you're finding you have to screw the adjusting screw in quite a lot to try and remove "play" then it's possible your gears on the sector shaft and/or the power piston are worn. I've been doing quite a lot of research on recirculating-ball Steering gearboxes and if the gears (teeth) are worn...
I’m after the one with PPS (4412060190) but I could just swap the bits over from that one assuming they’re the same input shaft, power piston etc etc l… Thanks for showing me that. It’s pricey but cheaper than a whole box.
That is what I was worried about. Thank you for that.
Unfortunately Toyota discontinued the power piston/valve assembly so buying that part new isn't an option anymore.
Because it was wearing in a certain part of the teeth, between that wear and the original/untouched surface there is a lip or bur. Run your fingernail over the teeth and you'll see what I mean. All 3 spare boxes I had have this.
When you add a new sector shaft to a worn power piston the metal...
Has any had any luck filing or grinding the teeth on the sector shaft and/or power piston teeth to make gears mesh smoothly and take any play out? Especially removing any burs or ridges which can cause binding.
I have a few spare boxes and they all have play where the teeth mesh, but bind if...
Gday, yeah I replaced the spindle with a needle bearing type. Much tighter tolerances!
I had already done this on the other side, so I've got both sides with the newer needle bearing spindles now. Much better.
*update*
Well I tore it down and replaced CV and spindle.
No more sound. Nice and tight. Fixed. 👍🏻
I actually think it was because my old spindle was worn a bit and the CV axel was rattling around. when the axel was under drive tension (between diff gear and drive flange) it didn’t move...
Absolutely no play 3/9 or 12/6. New genuine driveshaft unis recently too (sound was there before and after).
There’s plenty of grease in there!
I mean I guess it could be pinion slop but why only on a certain rotation? And it doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the diff… it’s in the end of...
Gday brains trust!
Wondering if I can get your professional listening opinion on the following…
Front feft side is making a driveline clunking sound ONLY in a certain rotation of the wheel/axle.
First video shows the noise on a certain part of the wheel rotation.
Second video is when the...
