Found the source of ticking sound from engine bay, hole in EGR cooler! I first thought it was from the valves not being adjusted properly, but after adjusting the valves twice and the noise not going away, I found the source. I put high heat JB weld for now, not sure it it’ll hold, but the sound...
Second on fuel idle solenoid. I just had this issue on my car, the solenoid is controlled by the “computer”. My engine fuse was blown so the computer wasn’t functioning. Check the fuse and the solenoid.
PO had enlarged the radio opening and I wanted to install an original radio, which has a narrow bezel. My neighbor and fellow FJ40 owner offered to 3D model the radio bezel, and I printed it online. Results really exceeded my expectations. I may reprint and enlarge the text a bit.
Update to the problem: the sound was indeed coming from the rear main seal! Thank you guys.
I took the transmission out and all the clutch component, and ran the car with just the flywheel, the sound was still there which confirmed the hypothesis that it’s not from the clutch components.
I...
I actually saw him yesterday at a swap meet but he was busy so I only talked to him briefly.
I saw he has recently posted instructions for installing the rear main seal, where he puts silicon on the outer edge of the main seal. I am pretty sure I didn’t do that, so maybe the rear main seal is...
Because of the compression numbers? I’ll test again after I solve this issue.
Oil pressure is between second and third line on the gauge. I haven’t tested vacuum yet, but was the very next thing on my list, was gonna do it while tuning my freshly rebuilt carb.
I tried spraying water and it changed how it sounds, although it didn’t completely go away. When it warmed up water didn’t make a different though. As a last resort I spray white lithium grease in there as well when engine was off, on the engine side not the clutch side and the noise was still...
I don’t think I had posted any pics so far. Is the 5th gear oiler an internal part of the transmission? I’m not familiar with it. Should I have done something special while installing it? The transmission +tcase were build by Georg so I have high confidence in them.
Unfortunately no, but I have a cherry picker and have dropped the transmission on my 45 with it before. Just time consuming, and a bummer since I’m so close to finally driving it.
Forgot to mention, I had also checked the starter, it is not engaged after start up so I had also ruled that out.
But it sounds like either way I have to drop the transmission to root cause it more.
