My parents recently bought a CJAA, if I remember correctly they have factory pyrometers as well. I'll have to see if I can get some logs of that one at some point too. I've come to realize these engines can tolerate a lot more heat than is normally considered safe, but I still haven't gotten...

    HZJ73 vs BJ74?

I've never driven a 1HZ (owned one, it was seized). I have owned and driven a 1HD-T, and yes, it was reliable and had good power. I've also owned and driven a gutless and unreliable Toyota...they make all sorts.

    HZJ73 vs BJ74?

In the finest tradition of Toyota reliability!

1800ºF is scary hot! The highest I ever saw my ALH get was about 1680ºF on a 4th gear dyno pull, I also saw low to mid 1600's briefly a few times on the road. I'm probably far too conservative with my right foot, generally anything over about 1350ºF and I start to back off. The highest I've...

That's good to know, though not exactly encouraging! I've got a pair of BMW N63 intercoolers on order, they should be arriving by early next week and I'll see if I can get one to fit. If they don't do the job either I'll be back to attempting to fit another A2A intercooler. The N63 is a...

Out of curiosity I logged some data on a drive in my stock ALH Jetta, even with some full throttle uphill pulls in 5th and 6th IAT never exceeded 35ºC. If I can reduce the Prado's intake temps to that level theoretically EGT's should drop by a similar amount, which would be very nice.

    HZJ73 vs BJ74?

Electric locking hubs were introduced in 1990, so the BJ74 would have manual hubs while most JDM HZJ73's will have electric hubs. At that age plan to replace a lot of hoses, belts, gaskets, etc regardless of mileage. Parts age out just as much as they wear out. All other considerations aside...

I went out and did some more data logging, including a few full throttle pulls in 3rd and 4th gear. The turbo seems more responsive but it still wants to underboost until high rpm. There's quite a bit of power available at full throttle but EGT's get hot pretty quickly, it isn't hard to hit mid...

The squealing noise under load has been driving me nuts, and from what I could tell it wasn't coming from any of the charge piping or the intake manifold. It was a very similar noise to the one my ALH made when the exhaust manifold nuts had loosened, but there was no evidence of soot anywhere...

    Do I sense a 1HD engine approaching?

Upon closer inspection of the engine bay I don't think I could get a thick enough intercooler core on the intake manifold without cutting off access to the intake and exhaust manifold bolts, so it will probably have to be an OE type W2A intercooler. I'll probably pick up a cheap BMW N63 unit and...

    What's a 2LT worth in parts?

A friend of mine put one on Marketplace for something like $500, people were beating down his door to buy it. Burned tremendous amounts of oil, had over 330k km on it, fully disclosed.

I did some data logging last night and discovered that my intake air temps are quite high, reaching as much as 76ºC with an outside ambient temperature of around 5ºC. The heat exchanger stays nice and cool, the body of the intercooler is barely warm but the charge piping downstream of the...

That’s good to know. I’m going to try isolating the charge air piping between the turbo and intake manifold to confirm there’s no leak there, if not then it is probably somewhere in the intake manifold.

Well, I thought I had tracked down the boost leak to the intake manifold adapter, so I added a generous helping of sealant to the o-ring to see if that helped. No change whatsoever, unfortunately, which means I'm back to square one trying to find what is making the horrible squealing noise under...
