The wife and i spent this past weekend in Dahlonega and came across Amicalola falls. After looking at the falls and the lodge i found the gravel rd going into the forrest. I was wondering if any of you guys have explored that area. Noticed several trails branching off the rd that had obviously been wheeled but i am not sure if it is legal or not. I did see one sign that read no 4 wheelers! I figure it is illegal but at the same time saw no postings or gates?:confused:
 
yeah, been back there many times, not illegal at all. Used to be a fun little set of trails with a few rocks and ditches but nothing really difficult. Of course, that was yesteryear and now its all been neutered to the point you can drive mini-cooper on it.

I've known about if for 20 years and used to go up there occasionally but like so many other trails a few videos or pics hit the web and it just mushroomed into a traffic jam of ATL weekend warriors. From there you know the rest of the story.

that general area is where we did the geo run last year, about the same time temp gates went up and the graders came in.
 
everything was good and wet back there sunday. Just thought it would bea a cool place for a weekend event with the club. Camping and mild wheeling.etc.
 
Rjs78, RJ, went up there a few weeks ago on some of those forest service roads near amicalola falls. From what he was telling me, they sounded pretty fun.
 
I've been up to that area before. I haven't seen the trails you're referring to but that whole area is beautiful. This is one of those times I wish I lived a little closer. I'd be hitting that up every other weekend for some camping or whatever.
 
It's nice and senic, but the its pretty much all gravel roads. However, there are a couple of fun little trails leading to camp sites, but if your out there and want some good wheeling, hit up sheep wallow rd. as long as you don't mind the chance encounter with johnny law. But if your willing to drive an extra 30 minutes then Beasley Knob is the place to go. Very Beautiful and very fun.

How bout this--don't wheel illegally and you have no issues with the LEOs or fellow wheelers. Just sayin', with all due respect we don't mention these kinds of spots here.

Just like any illegal activity by an otherwise legal or respected group, it one of the added causes of more gates and restrictions to the sport and the perception that we are a bunch of hoodlums.
 
I'm all for keeping fences and gates to a minimum, but i find it a little hard to believe y'all have NEVER gone onto private property to drive..
 
you can believe whatever you want but 1x for me and that was 5 years ago when I first got into this and even then I did not know it was illegal.

After working with and on the Save Tellico fund in 09 I just have too much respect for the amount of work that goes into keeping legal trails open much less keeping jackasses off private property. Having a bunch of yahoos running around illegally trespassing not only makes you (figuratively speaking) look stupid but it lumps me (and many others) into the same group and frankly I have no time for it.

Furthermore, I have personally met with the FS regarding legal trails that were closed in an attempt to reopen and it fell on deaf ears-- too many people littering, blazing new trails, crossing creeks where not allowed and generally being dumb asses.

Short version--damn it man, do the right thing!

Well put Ted. When setting up the GPS event. Many trails that I wanted to use where now gated. It is cheaper to put up gates then it is to police. Once the government makes up their mind it is hard to change it back. We need to not give them any amino to buy more gates.
 
just playing devils advocate here, but isn't not riding a trail ,because its on private property, exactly the same as as not riding a trail ,because its gated. either way, its not being driven :hhmm:
 
I have not been on private property illegally or on a closed trail in over 20 years.
I have only been involved in Toyotas and the organized sport for 6. I four wheeled quite a bit up until 1998. As much as it would be fun to go blazing about, I feel it is disrespectful to property owners (of which I am one) and to those in the sport who have worked so hard in the land management issues.
Nor can I afford to be caught, ticketed or arrested for something of this nature.
It is just bad form.

not quite sure what your point is but this is about being responsible to our sport and you either are or are not.

I'm not gonna do this justice tonight but I'll try:

My opinion is this: there are 2 kinds of wheelers.

1) The crowd that frankly does not care and simply finds a construction site, developing neighborhood, creek bottom, power line etc. and says "damn that looks cool..." Then calls a few buddies and says "I found a great place..." Next thing ya know there's a steady stream of trucks (usually J**ps :D) down on the power line tearing creek bottoms all to hell and throwing trash all over the place. This crowd simply finds a convenient location near the house without the first care of the of how it effects the bigger picture.

Now remember, this conversation all started with SW Rd in Dawsonville... Do ya know what's now happening??? wait for it... It's now in the county minutes to start throwing up gates b/c they've simply have had enough of what I have just described.

Then there's this crowd:

2) The responsible wheelers that do care and understands that sometimes playing by the rules isn't easy and is usually very inconvenient but it's the right thing to do. Why do you think we drive all over the stinkin' SE just to find a place to ride?

Don't get me wrong, this crowd is not perfect but I can honestly say most of them that I know have never knowingly driven by a "Private Property" or "No Trespassing" sign or around a gate just to go wheeling. These are also the guys you see with a trash bag on the roof or tailgate full of other people' sh*t fro crowd #1.


Now... all that said, please forward your nanna's address so we can wheelin' in her front yard :flipoff2:
