Just a quick question or two...

Anyone out there familiar with the Kenwood line of receivers (ie Kenwood DNX9140) that use Garmin maps?

What is the display like when using topo maps? Can you view from the "top down"? I saw one pic somewhere that showed a "horizontal" view which is fine for street navigation, but a true top down view would be nice.

Can you choose what info is displayed on the map?

I like the idea of buying one of these double DIN units for my LX450, it would make a for a clean install - if the GPS maps display well I might not have to purchase a Lowrance unit specifically for off road navigation.

I guess the bottom line is this, does the Kenwood DNX9140 do a reasonable job, good enough to replace a stand alone off road GPS?

I know that quite a few people are looking for this info, if anyone could help out that would be great... pics would be even better!

Thanks in advance...

I guess I'm not using the correct terminology since I haven't actually owned a GPS yet. What I'm getting at is whether or not the unit lets you plot your current route, i.e. lets you mark points on the map.

For instance if you wanted to plot the route that you are taking while you're driving, saving way points as you go so that you could back track, can you do this from the unit's touch screen? Could you retrieve the route from the unit later?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

Any idea if this Kenwood unit is compatible with a Kenwood HAM radio and able to display APRS in Tactical mode?

oh man, now that would be a wet dream!! no whammies, no whammies... i'd love a dual din clean input to my 710! and IF it would use the correct logic and decay for moving stations.... i am SO intrigued....

I know, I know it would be a sweet, sweet setup.

I have longed for a Kenwood RC-D710 control panel with APRS connected to a TM-D710A Transceiver since they came out and now that the new DNX9980HD eXcelon In-Dash 2-DIN AV Navigation System with Built-in Bluetooth & HD Radio is out. My mind is racing with the possibilities.

Here are the links to these items
Kenwood - RC-D710
Kenwood - TM-D710A
Kenwood - DNX9980HD

It would be great if they worked together!

Also, can anyone confirm if the new DNX9980HD has the same ability to download topo maps like the DNX9140 had?

the RC 710 is what you'd use if you had a v71 right? i have the TM-D710 (and used APRS with my garmin 60Cx) and its head is the same as the rc710, so you wouldn't need both, just the 710, right?!
