turbo on a BJ70 3B ii

so i am installing a turbo onto a 89 BJ70 rag top and came across an interesting tidbit that i thought i would share.
with a tiny bit of massaging you can install a 13BT manifold onto B, 2B, 3B inline pump but as soon as you go to the 3b ii then you have a new beast...
the exhaust manifold on a 3b ii is like a short header system, about 6" long runners. and another difference is that the 3Bii manifiold has 10 bolts where as all the others have the normal 8 bolts.
to over come this set back i built a one off adapter for between the 13BT manifold and the head.
this is what it finished up as:
as you can see there are some very close clearences between the 2 bolt patterns. also there are some castings int he block that you must take into consideration.
the fit is very nice and the finished product will allow for the use of all the 13BT manifold and turbo for a ultra clean fit.
i will post pics if anyone wants them of the completed setup next week.

over 10 hours into the adapter from design to completion...
i will be posting the ETs when it is all done, both stock, with turbo and with turbo and propane injection...

Wayne, just looking at the two manifolds in the picture. Would another option have been to cut and swap the two sets of flanges, thereby allowing you to bolt the 13BT manifold directly to the 3BII head?

i talked to 3 different machine shops and they all said the same thing...
don't do it.
so the manifold adapter was designed...

oh, and another reason is, i wanted a bolt on kit for those that end up with a 3B ii...
this way a person can always go back to the original set up if the turbo packed it in...

Interesting to know that toyota made something different than the log-manifold that comes with our CDN market 3B's

i can not say for sure, the 2 Dave's might be able to answer that one but i will guess, yes only in white.

fuel and temp guages only in the dash
manual windows, mirrors and door locks
manual clutch
vinyl interior
rubber floor mats
2 peice doors all around
rubber boots from the factory for the 4 way flasher and key lock
fold down wipers
windshield recivers mounted on the hood

all in all a cruiser i can see my self owning one day.

I'll be quite interested in the outcome of this turbo project, as my JDM 88 BJ-73 has the 3B-II in it as well. Not sure that AXT supplies a manifold to suit this purpose. I went with AXT for my BJ-42; however, if AXT (or another maker) can't supply a new manifold appropriate to a 3B-II, then I'll have to be creative like you have been.

i am making notes and collecting parts to make a kit for the 3B ii, i do not know of anyone that makes a kit for this engine but then i could be wrong, i have been before.
i am taking pics as i go so you will be able to see the fit and finish once i am done.
i am also doing the 0-100km test with this one and adding PI so we can have a real life test on records as well as i will be putting 3000 miles on it at the end of the month.

I checked on this and AXT does not provide one. I have 2 AXT's currently (BJ42, BJ70) and this new setup with the 13BT will be all I run on the 3BII's and any more 3B's I convert in the future. the best thing I like so far is the exit of the exhaust the 13bt is much better for exhaust routing than AXT I have always hated that design. Also they are running the turbo so close to the block that it is a pain, the 13BT is off set lots of room to work. my 2cents.
