So i am finally getting around to installing my Pyro. I was wondering if I could get a few pics from the HDJ81 guys out there with the 1 HD T engine that have them installed. I am just looking for pics where you guys installed the probe. If you could post up some pic that would be great.

Cheers

Anyone have a pic or could take one?

Thanks

Hi Splittilps,

This is my BJ74's 13B-T pyro probe location. Dont know if it will help much.
It's post turbo:

Cheers.

Thanks for the pic but would really like to see an 1 HD T per turbo pic so i have an idea of what i am doing.

cheers

Here you go

Pre Turbo obviously.
Ideally you want to have the manifold off for this operation.
There is a rib inside the manifold where the pyro goes and
without being able to see the inside it's tough to get the 1/4" NPT fitting
to the right depth (just flush on the inside) and it's also hard to gauge
the depth of the probe so that it's far enough into the exhaust stream.

Thanks that helps alot!

x2 on pulling the manifold. There isn't much clearance otherwise and I found it difficult to spin the tap straight because the handles kept hitting stuff.

Plus if you take the manifold out, you eliminate the chance of chips entering the turbo, don't you?

Does it take much time to get the manifold out?. Is the location showed in the picture ideal?. It'd be very useful to take the picture to a mechanic and just say: "do this", specially in Spain where is very difficult to make them understand anything.

And about the mechanic, should it be taken to somewhere that's specialist in soldering or metal related, or just a regular mechanic?

yes . pulling the entire manifold let you make a clean easy instalation and avoiding posible damage at the turbo turbine side ...

In my case I need another pair of hands to pull the manifold .. with the turbo it's a little heavy ..

So I did the install today, not to bad but it did take longer then I thought. I talked to a few guys around here that have installed the probe with the manifold still on and they didn't have any troubles with metal pieces getting into the turbo. They told me to first start the truck and leave it running while you drill the holes and the exhaust will push out the metal. I drilled a smaller pilot hole and once I got through the exhaust pushed any pieces that were there out. Then I drilled the right size hole while the truck was running and the pieces came flying out. When I tapped the hole the truck was running as well. Everything went well and no problems with the turbo. Ill put up some pics once I have everything hooked up.

Cheers

Thanks again 70sguy for the pic:cheers:

Thank you Tapage.

How much time do you think it would take to take it out?

in the day .. but seems the tach to let the engine running funtion fine . . thought without the turbo attached ?

And about the mechanic, should it be taken to somewhere that's specialist in soldering or metal related, or just a regular mechanic?

Probably just a regular mechanic who's more on the careful side and doesn't rush everything. The tap is tapered and it takes a few tries, as Sheldon described, of going in and out and just cutting enough thread for the probe bung to fit tightly and just at the right depth. I guess there's always the risk of the manifold cracking from too much pressure...so it does require some planning and care.

So i got the pyro installed, i also installed a boost and oil pressure gauge. The Pyro was pretty easy just a little nerve racking. boost was simple and the oil gauge was also easy, just took me awhile to find the right fitting so I could still use the factory gauge.

Here is the gauge pod that I made. I used some 2" ABS pipe and some plexi glass. I cut the ABS pipe at 15 deg angle to angle the gauges so i could see them better. Then i glues the ABS pipe to the plexi glass. Once it was dry I used a dremel to cut a hole in the plexi glass so the gauges would fit. I had to cut the dash a little but i think it turned out ok.
