Sadly, I’ve reached the ‘life priorities have changed’ stage of my multiple landcruiser journey.
As so many have said on this site, I have other demands (in my case it’s multiple houses to restore, a kid in college and another about to be, etc. etc.) in life that mean the landcruiser isn’t getting (and won’t get) the love and attention it deserves.
So I am parting with the truck and a sh*t-ton of spare parts that I have been holding on to because ‘I might need these someday’. I want it all to go at once, so I’m setting what I think is a move-it-now price. I do not want to break it up and part out the whole shop. You could convince me to pack up a transmission or something, and ship it, but it’d have to be *really* worth my time.
BLUF: $30k for the whole lot
81 BJ40. B engine. Almost-complete frame-off restoration. Easiest to just see the build thread. I'll post a picture on this ad, but really there's anything you could want to see on the build thread and the truck sits as it was last pictured in that ad. It was shipped to Oregon and has been sitting inside the shop in the high desert since 2022. I've got a couple videos of my son driving it around the ranch, but aside from the build thread, not a lot since the move.
Best to just see the build thread, but here are some details.
The good:
- new body metal: tub floor, rear quarters, real sill, rear side panels, fender wells, front fenders and aprons, front bib. I am sure I’m forgetting something, but pretty much the whole tub had to be rebuilt because the S. American cruiser rot was covered by Bondo - see the thread.
- disc brake swap
- rebuilt knuckles; new bearings and etc. (we all know)
- H55F five speed (this is ridiculous for the B engine but I did it before I was thinking)
- rebuilt split case
- frame off build (every nut, bearing, bolt, and fitting replaced
- frame and body sandblasted to metal and primed/painted with epoxy primer, color, clear.
- new MAF medium suspension
- original Medium Blue 857 paint throughout.
- rebuilt 8274 winch
- new upholstery and seat foam throughout (except passenger seat - have the material but not applied)
I don't even know what else to cite in the 'The good' category; I feel like I've done almost ALL, and pretty well for an amateur, but just didn't get finished and can't do it now. But to be honest, it DOES still need some attention. See below.
The bad:
- needs new ambulance doors. I cut the bottoms off with plans to weld in new patch pieces, or buy some from City Racer, but that’s kinda where the project stalled. There's new gaskets in the existing, and I have the handle hardware, so if you wanna just put in patch panels that'd be pretty easily done.
- there’s still quite a bit of oil blow by, and not peak power even from a 25 year old B engine. Probably needs piston rings (assuming there’s anyone out there who even wants to keep the B engine anymore. I wanted to because I like original, but it needs some love to be a capable engine again).
- I have the remaining upholstery, but the passenger seat isn’t recovered in the camel/tan that I went with.
- New fenders and aprons still need paint
The ugly:
- my body work isn’t perfect. I think I’ve done a hell of a job on the hood and the cowl and the windshield frame. And getting the rear quarters welded in and the side panels repaired replaced, and the roof refurbished and etc. etc.. But, to be 100% honest, there are waves in paint on the B-pillar area, and spots where the sheet metal isn’t smooth through the doors.
One can see this in the next to last picture in the build thread (also the one attached to this ad).
If I were keeping it, and wanted to make it a Concourse truck, I’d start sanding it again. But if you drive it from point A to B and if no one is up close, it looks great putting down the road. Just wanna be honest there so I'm not advertising something like a Proffitt's or FJCo product; this is a guy in his garage who loved to do a good job, but not a pro.
I'll deliver on a trailer to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Northern California for $1/mile round trip from 97463.

I'll be taking my own sweet time on this build, and it will be a bearing by bearing, bolt by bolt effort - should I call it a "frame off", not quite sure I'm going there, but generally a "bit at a time frame off". There will be some mods but nothing like the V8/H55/ARBs that I did...
