1970 FJ40 | Running Project | New Braunfels, TX
Price: $12,500 Location: New Braunfels, TX Title: Bonded Texas Title (issued 2020) - Registration good through 7/27The Story: Selling my June 1970 FJ40. I bought this in Dec 2019 as a project. The previous owner stripped it down to the basics and painted it with Raptor liner for a hunting lease. My main goal was getting it street-legal again, which was a success. It’s a blast to run around the side streets and even more fun off-road, but it’s time to pass it on.
The Basics:
- Starts and drives well
- Straight six engine
- "Three on the tree" manual transmission
- Rebuilt locking hubs
- Replaced master cylinder and brake pads
- New manifold and exhaust
- Installed missing parking brake
- New water pump, thermostat housing, and hoses
- Installed wiper system, bumperettes, backup light, and spare tire mount
- Replaced wheels and caps with originals
- Rust: Originally found in Louisiana. The underbody and frame have some rust holes that were coated over by the previous owner. (See photos).
- Carburetor: I let it sit for a year and gunked up the carb. Even after a rebuild kit, a mechanic friend ended up swapping it for a knockoff carb with a manual choke. It runs fine, but I still have the original carb that goes with the sale.
- Electrical: There is a short somewhere that slowly drains the battery, so I pull the negative cable when it sits. Also, the brake lights will not illuminate while the headlights are turned on.
- Speedo/Odo: Neither works. I tried replacing it with a Specter Off-Road cable, but I think I bought the wrong one. I don't drive it fast enough to care, so I stopped messing with it.
- Original carburetor
- Long bench seats
- 1971 hood
- Miscellaneous extra parts
