Been trying to track down a leaking sunroof going on almost a year now, good thing it doesnt rain too much here but when it does..it sucks. I have to throw a ghetto poly tarp over the cruiser with bungee straps to keep it dry inside.

Anyway so here is what ive done so far:

  • cleaned and checked drains, flow fine and clamp is on there tight.

  • replace dust rail covers and sealed with 3m weatherstrip adhesive.

  • added then removed factory sunroof deflector

  • bicycle inner tube fix, fixed wind noise but not water

I have narrowed it down to what is happeneing but dont know why or how. The water is geting up and over the sunroof pan then running down the A pillar. Pictured here:

These two are of the roof drain and new dust cover with sealant then where the water is coming down to hitting the harness bundle before soaking my floorboard.

Please help save this cruisers' interior, i like the carpet and mold free smell:cheers:

Someone posted to use very thin speaker wiring under the weather stripping of the sunroof.

Mine was leaking the same way yours was and now its dry.

Its kinda hard to explain, if I need to I'll run out and snap a pic.

Do you mean between the weatherstrip and the glass? Thats the bicycle fix i listed above as already done.

all the way with bicycle inner tube cut into a long strip. sure did quite down the windnoise but still leaking.

No that i think of it when I was looking a little at the sunroofs weatherstrip, i noticed small outlets in the bottom of the striping. Are these for water?

I think its a attempt to deflect water from coming in. I took mine off and its been fine. I'll report back as its going to be raining for the next 3 days.

Your seal could be so warn out its just letting to much water in. A new roof can be had for IIRC $250 from cdan.

No, I dont think you talking about the same thing. The weatherstrip around the sunroof has small oblong holes in the bottom, not sure how many but didnt semm like many. Now im thinking these may have something to do with it or there may be tears in my strip.

Are you sure the roof strip can be purchased separately? I thought no...

sorry but i think its pretty s***ty to have to replace the entire sunroof because its leaking after 15 years. Did toyota engineer the rest of the rig to last 15 years?

Maybe the PHH

The sunroof is just poorly designed. And 15 years of the sun beating down on it doesnt help either.

phh, thanks for reminding me...190k and ticking
i understand that but my truck has also been a garage queen until i bought her.

cool breeze, I feel your pain and have the EXACT same problem...I just replace my leather interior and a few other things, but the water coming into my truck is almost enough to make me want to sell it, even at a loss. I can't stand the fogged up windows and musty odor.

I believe the problem is the sunroof gasket is old, mine definitely shows signs of wear and especially in the area where the metal bracket came through to hold the wind deflector down. It's off now and my roof is duct-taped shut, I was tired of the second shower I got every morning on my way to work.

Mine leaks even if it's just minor water coming in. Even snow melting ever so slowly (really cold water hitting me). I think what is happening is the water is coming in through the seal and just staying on the glass of the sunroof...that let's it travel inside of the channel that is supposed to take the water to the drains...mine are completely unblocked and flow like Niagara Falls...so it's not the drains. My roof liner is out right now as I am trying desperately to fix this. My water then comes in through two area where bolts are holding it into place...the directly onto me...now my new leather seats as well. I have it caulked and duct taped shut too..no water for the most part, although there appears to be a leak in the firewall that lets a little water into the floorboard as well...not engineered too well to keep water out that's for sure. I thought I had that area fixed as well, I ran some weather stripping above the brake booster in the engine compartment to channel water away from that are where I think it was entering...must be getting in somewhere...I HATE LEAKS!!

I think the slits in the seal you're talking about are for air to get in and out of the seal, it's hollow. Some have put a wire (although I think it sounds difficult to push a limp wire into an entire gasket) to give it some body....basically doing the same thing as a bicycle inner tube. I don't like rigging things like this, I just want it fixed right, but I hate hanging parts that don't guarantee a fix, especially expensive parts.

I still don't have a clear answer as to what I need to do to replace the seal on the sunroof and what the cost is...is it all the glass and gasket, entire sunroof complete or just the gasket? I contemplated welding it shut...GONE for good, but I am not letting this poorly engineered componenet beat me...no way. My wife says take it to Toyota...I can't imagine what they would charge and quite frankly I don't think they know as much about Land Cruisers as this forum, so I like my odds here better...but will I be insane before it's actually fixed...that's an entirely different question all together. There are only so many medications I can take to remain calm in regard to the water leaking into my truck...and I'm running low!

Anyone interested in a Land Cruiser with new leather seats? I might be selling soon if I can't get to the bottom of this.

Roof meaning the entire glass piece with the weather stripping.

No doubt about it glass and seal are one unit Dan's price is about $285ish.

posted above...

Glass comes out in about 2 min. Buy the new one, put it in, 2 min.

I will be interested in a write up on this - may be one in the manual, have not looked. Right now clear sealing tape around the sun roof works great. Replace it every six months or so, and it stays dry in Oregon. I thought about a good rubber calk, but did not want to commit to that just yet.

I have always hated sunroofs - heavy, expensive, reduce head room, leak.

Mine is definitely the sunroof, it drips down on me in the mornings (before I duct taped it shut)...my headliner is out or it would channel down the A pillar and onto the floor. By eliminating the headliner I was able to keep it from running to the floor, it now hits me or my seats (again pre duct tape). But l've continued to see a bit of water on the floorboards...my carpet is loose so I can pull it up and inspect it reguarly to see what's going on until I can "finally" (if that's possible) get a dry cabin.

I guess the moisture (beads of water under the carpet) could be a windshield leak...I've heard they are common if it has been replaced, not sure why replacing a windshield in a Land Cruiser would be anymore difficult than other vehicles that these would commonly leak while other cars don't, but not everything in life makes sense. I guess I should look at my glass and determine if it's been replaced...tracking a leak from this area will not be easy though.

So....does anyone have a price on what a new piece of glass will cost with a rubber seal? I guess it's as good as anywhere to start...I am thinking the seal is simply worn out...though I still believe water entering should logically channel down the drains (which again are completely clear and all four flowing like a river)...instead somehow the water ends up on the opposite side and in the truck...no sense at all, just bad engineering.

wet issue

my 80 landcruiser got wet in front passenger side carpet floor and when i pulled the seat belt on the middle seat driver side it was also wet. my mechanic who i go to did a fix--opened up the sunroof exposed the 2 drain holes (there was one that was plugged and then unplugged 4 of the plastic covers by the sides of running board and water came out. can you just leave out the holes unplugged permanent and let water out everytime it rains?

I did that when I had the interior and sunroof assembly out of the vehicle.
