I bought a 93 Land Cruiser that had a LRA aux tank "partially" installed. This thing also had Hella lights "partially" installed as well as the ARB bumper partially installed. Everything was done mechanically but when it came to the electrical apparently they gave up.

Any way the main problem I am having with hooking the tank up is the "box of parts" I got does not have a "tee" fitting for the aux tank to pump into the main tank. Anybody know where to get the tee and which line of the main tank to "tee" into? The LRA directions leave much to be desired and in their parts list I did not see a tee fitting listed. Any help on where to get the tee and good fuel lines would be appreciated.

The Hella lights just need to be wired and so do the blinker lights on the front ARB bumber. This is easy but that fuel line tee has me a bit puzzled.

Tony, you will need to tee into the main tank's breather line.

Your local Napa should have a suitable tee, along with the fuel hose - since this is low pressure you don't need the fuel-injected hose.

Hope this helps! Keith.

FAQ and the search function are your friend.

Romer has a nice AUX tank writeup that links about 3 other installs.

If I remember correctly:

The tee fits onto the main tank breather line that goes to the filler neck. Just pump from the aux tank into this line.

Tee connections:

1. To the main tank.
2. To the breather on the filler neck.
3. From the output of the aux tank electric fuel pump.

I am missing my tee junction to splice into the vent tube for the main tank. The vent tube hose is 1/2" and the hose coming from the fuel pump is 5/16". I looked everywhere and can not find a tee that has two 1/2" openings and one 5/16" opening. I would prefer to have a Y junction instead of a T but it is not looking promising. Any ideas?

Check the links in post #5. Your problem is not unique.

That was something I over looked, thanks for pointing that out to me.

Using brass fittings, what would you use for the threads to make sure it does not leak? The fuel pump has a nipple with a threaded end that screws into the pump and I was wondering about the teflon tape on the threads but it is fuel so I did not know if that would work or not. Any suggestions?

I am still trying to get used to the search tool, I am getting there. ;-)

how large is the LRA tank?

I do not know how big it is yet until I fill it up. I took the tank out (heavy) and looked all over it and the size was not listed anywhere. I have polypropylene fittings for the connections now but I am getting mixed signals on the internet about if it is gasoline safe or not. I asked McMaster-Carr before I bought them if it is gasoline safe and they said yes but when I got them they are white not black. I did a search on the material and like I said I am getting mixed messages. I like the 45 degree "Y" connection for sure that will tap into the main tank but my concern is the exhaust pipe that is "not that far away" if something does happen as far as the material breaking down. A leak should not be an issue with new hoses but the original hose is very stiff. I am tempted to just cut it in the middle and use it for the "Y" connection.

The fuel pump barbs that screw into both side of the pump is concerning me, what should I put on the threads to prevent leaks?

If it's heavy, then it sounds like a 40 gallon tank perhaps?

Don't forget that your fuel pump needs to have a check valve and a filter of some sort before it.

I used all brass fittings for my aux tank project and teflon tape on all threads. All of my stuff came from ACE hardware. The fill hose is a metric hose that is special but everything else is pretty much locally sourced.

Snatch!

Well I was able to snatch up an overhead console with the subtank fuel gauge on it which is on it's way from Australia. Once this gets in I will finish my install.

I have an adapter from my fuel pump that adapts up to the 1/2" fuel line that will go straight into the Y connector as shown here.

So when the console gets here I will be completing the installation. Seem like my new purchase is keeping me busy. :grinpimp:

I have a friend that is telling me I should not tap into the main tank vent hose and should get my sending unit assembly modified to have an additional connection for the aux tank because he believes all this rubber hose (he thinks I should have teflon hoses custom made) will eventually leak and cause problems. I was worried because this Y is about 8" or so away from the exhaust. Has anyone had problems with the rubber hose connections leaking? Anyone? :meh:

I've had no issues so far. However, I installed fuel rated hose. That white Y piece, is it fuel rated also? It looks to be made of nylon and if so, that's a cause for concern.

I thought the same thing and was told it is the... I have the material sheet at home and the name escapes me at the moment. The hose I am using is for fuel lines and is stamped as such on the side of the hose with the diameter. I will check on the material tonight when I get home.

Well the install is done and I just have to test it out. The rig was down for 2 weeks (still not back together) while I ripped out the interior, dash and the radiator to do all my upgrades at once. The radiator was a surprise but I have it replaced along with the 4 main hoses and thermostat. I installed the overhead console, did the pin 7 mod, added my switches to the dash for the sub tank pump, lights and CDL and installing the new head unit with the 7" screen w/built in navigation. Now I have to get it out this weekend while I am hunting quail and check it out.

I am happy with the new tank and overhead console, now if I can only get sun visors. My DS visor was broken where the 2 screws connect it to the headliner so modifying them is not an option, at least not on the DS.

Tony

nice job!

Any pics of how things turned out ? WOuld like to see what you did with the overhead console. I have always wanted switches up there like the pilots have only lot less. :D
