Photo of Fuel Door Spring - Correct Part Number?

Hi everyone. When I bought my 1992 FJ80 it didn't have a fuel door spring or any remaining pieces of the original one. I got this part, 77360-02020 from my dealer and think it may be the wrong part. I took the fuel door off and couldn't figure out how to get the damn thing on. Can anyone verify if it is the correct part and I am just not seeing how to put it on?

Thanks.

it looks like the right part, just checked mine. The s shaped end fits around the hinge pin, and the metal spring part sticks up. In your picture you would have to rotate the spring 90 degrees down and attach.

That bag refers to it as a Spring Ass. I always thought people like that were 4 seasons types.

No better time to replace the "Spring Ass". Lol. Damn snow birds.

I like my fix better (see pic). That's clear silicone seal holding spring in. It was cheaper plus, if I time it just right, I can take out service station attendants! See, here in Orygun, we ain't smart enuff or safe enough to pump our own fuel. We're all convinced that it keeps the cost of fuel down, too! Go figure!!!

Thanks for all the replies. I had to shave some of the plastic off with a razor knife in order to fit it in the hinge pin. It was the right part but in my case it necessary to shave some plastic off - otherwise it wouldn't fit.

80t0ylc - I like your fix, that is what I would have done if given another chance. Here in Jersey attendants pump the fuel too. I think it is just NJ and OR that have this law and I know for sure some women here cannot pump gas themselves!

Thanks, it works for me. I think North Dakota also has the law, IIRC. Unfortunately, I've lived in all three states and prefer pumping my own fuel.

Nice! That's exactly what I did, except I used JB-Weld.

I just used a speed nut and pressed it between the hinge. Has been working for over a year. probably $.02

I'm having the same problem getting a new spring on my filler door as well. I have a part number of 77360-22020 the truck is a 93 The filler door looks the same as the 92 door but I can't see there being two different springs. At this point it is impossible to get the spring to pass through the hinge and clip on the pin without breaking it. Can anyone help me with this, Cruiser Dan where are you?

Thanks
George

77360-22020 from CDan for my 93

I had to sand off plastic to get it on the hinge on my 93 which is a tiny bit different.

Replacing that little bastid is a chore.....
It's cheap but it makes up for it in agrivation.......:flipoff2:
I prefer to remove the door and work on it on the bench as opposed to trying to clip that SOB in place whilst the door is attached to the vehicle.

Same here. I removed door but also trimmed. I did not take a before photo, but this is after. I hope that part I trimmed off is not needed. It fit easily after the trimming.

I've got a ghetto spring ass. The gas door wasn't working when I purchased my cruiser, but in the console was a metal clip like piece like the ones you find on the back of a garage door opener. I just used that and a piece of double sided foam material and voila, the door works. Now my ghetto spring ass has been pop lock and dropping correctly for almost 3 years. I'll try to grab a pic tomorrow.

I wonder If this part Is a across the board part that fits numerous Toyotas? I have a 1991 Cressida that The PO has silicones In there and It only works when It wants to! I googled the P/N and It comes up as Fuel Fill Spring Assy. It lists for $3.??. If this little part will fix the problem It Is well worth the 3 bucks, or even better FREE from a Jacked Up Camry at the local Pull A Part! Just my .02

I replaced this on my 92 and it probably was only $3 but, as mentioned before, it makes up for low cost in high aggravation. I spent about 2 hours installing it. I removed the door, put in a padded vise, drove the hinge pin out, slipped the part in, drove the hinge pin back in and reinstalled assembly. Kind of a pain in the ass to try and not damage the exterior paint.

Here's some pics of my quick fix that's worked for years. Metal garage door clip slid into that little space on the gas door. Hasn't made any noticeable scratches other than dust, has always popped the door right out, and works for me. Normally I like to repair my truck with as much OEM parts as possible, but for something unseen like this and not an everyday use item I feel fine with this fix.

Now I feel like a slacker spending $3.31 on the OEM part. I guess somebody's got to keep Dan in parts. :grinpimp:

Thanks for this suggestion. :)

Did this and it works a charm.
Easiest to attach by removing flap off truck first....then lightly massaging (bending) speed nut with long-nosed pliers.

Cheers from New Zealand
