I bought a 1985 Hilux 4x4 last month and got it back home to Ohio a couple weeks ago. Quite a bit of work needs to be done to the truck. While I'm waiting for an engine part to come in the mail, I thought I'd try and make some headway on the bed.

The old bed is all rusted through. You could walk around in it and not fall through, but only because of the plywood sheet screwed to a couple 2x4s on top of the frame. I bolted a 4x6 white oak beam to the front frame as a bumper last week. today I pulled the bed off, and planed the white oak decking from 4/4 to 3/4. After a quick wipe down with a kerosene-soaked rag so I could see what I'm working with, I called it a night.

I guess I've got some welding in store for tomorrow. Frame plating, headache rack, etc.

Nice work on the bed and bumper. The frame looks worse looking from above with the bed off then I remembered. I do remember that that cross member wasn't attached. Maybe the bed will hold the frame together now.

I spent yesterday cutting bar stock and welding plates on the frame. As for the tray, I was originally planning on using wooden stringers running along the frame, but I'm thinking about changing my plan to use the bar stock and just bolting it straight to the bed support columns and attaching my tray to those. Any thoughts? I'll have to get some more pics for y'all.

Scratch that idea. I'm going to do wood on metal. For the bed frame. In the interest of time, I'm going to build just the tray now, and then bring some of my bars back up to Oakland and build the bumper, headache guard, etc. later.

I got those cross-members and some plates on this afternoon. Going to see to that tailpipe that used to be a stack soon too.

the old bed, with stack...that will become tailpipe. Oh and the huge tires are also going. Anyone got a Chevy? These 33x12.5 wide climbers would be perfect for you, not on a Toyota with a 58 HP diesel motor.

Just finished welding that tailpipe.

NO mas stack? How are we going to parade around town and look like total d-bags wail blowing black smoke on every one?

Seriously, the build looks like it's coming along well. Looks like you got some nice welds so that piece acculy does something.

I guess we'll just have to refrain from being total d-bags, Adam. As for the black smoke, It'll just come out the back, right onto the car behind. Taking that tree down today, so no truck work. Should be back at it tomorrow.

Or, we could just drive around on two wheels.

I would not put wood directly against the metal of the frame. It will hold water and promote rusting. I would get an old inner tube and cut some strips, use them to make a sandwich between the wood and the metal.

Great idea, KLF. I'll try that.

POR 15 is your friendddd! nice welds. makes me wish my own projects were moving along this fast. keep up the good work!

Thanks, buddy. Good to see you on the forum. We'll do our best to convert you to a toyota nut. You should trade your broncos in for a Land Cruiser.

that would be very hard to do bro. fullsizes can fit where your rig can go too, as long as you don't mind flatting a few body panels ;)

Glad to see the truck is coming along.I think it found a good home! But whats all this talk about stacks and dbags. All diesels need a stack, its just the guys that have 5+" stacks that are dbags. What engine part are you waiting on?Just curious
