Which aftermarket windshield gasket?

i finally broke down and had a local company glue in my windshield and put on a metric sized universal rubber gasket. looks much better than the factory metal trim.

i dont have any close up pictures but the rubber gasket is about 24 mm wide and you put it on the windshield before you put the windshield in the truck.

I second Bryan 89's suggestion, generally the gluing holds out a bit better than a gasket.

I had our local glass guy looking all over for a decent 1 piece gasket/trim and he came up with nil. He's normally pretty resourceful. He pretty much said the same as the guys. Just use sealer.

Heck if anyone has the factory chrome trim and it's in good enough condition to reuse, I'll buy it.

It's still available from Toyota in chrome or black. I bought the black a few months ago. You might not like the price.

There's a thread on yotatech where it lists the part number for the factory rubber gasket that was used on 1st gen 4runner and 80's mini trucks in other markets. I could not find the link, but its on there somewhere.

I looked it up at work and it's sold by the piece. Not a kit and yes, it's very expensive. Even at my cost.

I bought the stock black rubber gasket for a first-gen 4X4 from Cruiser Dan. ~75 to my door.

brettinsanantonio,

here is the thing with the metal trim, if the windshield has ever been replaced before, then I would bet you a six pack that at least 25-30% of the clips that hold it on were broken, and therefore the retard windshield guy glued the trim back on with windshield adhesive.

if the windshield has not been out before, then.......i bet you a six pack that at least 25-30% of the clips that hold it down will break when you take it out. lol.

not to mention, when it has been glued down, its almost impossible to get off without bending/creasing the metal trim, in which case its garbage anyway.

This stuff is just 20 years old. its tired. and brittle.
So, in my opinion, if you are set on using the trim, i would steer clear of anything used because odds are, if it wasnt new stock or used stock that someone took of 15 years ago carefully and put away in storage for a rainy day, that its not going to be any better than what you pull off of your truck.

As for the rubber gasket approach. I barked up that tree too. I have a thread both on here and on yotatech about sourcing an option for it. mainly started it cause i hated the quality of work you get from the insurance windshield replacement companies, and my trim looked pretty raunchy too.

For one, the company in Australia which made it was "out of stock" and said they would contact me when their supplier made another run. that was over 4 months ago probably. still out of stock.

Additionally, i was forewarned about the rubber windshield gaskets by an old race car mechanic. he has turned a lot of wrenches in his day and told me to steer clear of them. for one, the windshield frame is much weaker without the urathane in it. the glue actually makes the windshield a strengthening member of the body. (you would be surprised how strong automotive glass is). Additionally, he questioned me, "why do you think roped in (gasketed) windshields were outlawed in the US?" The answer is they are quite dangerous.
Its very easy to be ejected from the car with a gasketed windshield.
he said they would pop out almost every collision the car had. Granted they were race cars, but it is worth noting that when they switched to urathaned in windshields the pop outs reduced significantly with the same types of wrecks.

So my .02, is just do the urathane. its cheap, warrantied, local, and if you pick a good quality person to do it, it will look like at least a high schooler did it, instead of a five year old.

phew...sorry for the novel.

here is a link to the yotatech thread. i dont know if it will be of any help but...(i chime in on page 3-4)

I work for a glass company, gasket everyone is referring to is called a molding. If I was you and absolutely had to have the oe Toyota 4 piece, I would hit the good old junk yard. And Tue clips can be bought from any mom and pop windshield installer for around 10 bucks.

Are you equating the gasket we refer to above and the "molding" as the purely aesthetic trim pieces that go around the perimeter of the windshield?

If so, that is not what we are referring to. These trucks, at least the american version of them, had a urethane in windshield. The earlier versions and overseas versions of these trucks had a gasket that actually held the windshield in place. No glue around the windshield frame what so ever. The OP, if i understood correctly, like me wanted to remove the factory metal trim "molding". He was going to accomplish this by putting in the old style gasketed windshield from a first gen truck.

as for the clips on the original metal trim, i realize they are available, but at least in my case it would not have mattered because the receivers on the actual trim were broken off by the person who put the last windshield in the truck. so there would have been nothing for the clips to attach too on the trim pieces.
