I've always cared more about the interior of my vehicles than the exterior. In fact, it drives me crazy when my wife drives my car and leaves half empty cans of pop or wrappers and especially lip gloss of any sorts.

So, with that background, I introduce my truck and my recent interior face lift.

It started with wanting a more functional center console, and by functional I mean it needed cup holders. My friend owns a cabinet shop and let me use his tools and some wood. While I was there I went ahead and made some rear storage panels for the new speakers I wanted. One thing led to another and I ended up completely gutting the interior and starting from scratch. When it was done I ended up with the following:

1. Carpet - Cargo area was too far gone to salvage, so I went with the Home Depot indoor-outdoor carpet. For the front carpet I took it out and gave it a good power wash. Afterwards I dyed it with a carpet dye kit from Americolor Carpet Dyes, using Ash Gray. Mixed it up and sprayed it using a weed sprayer. Worked very well and came out nice. Wish I would have remembered to spray the carpet on the door panels.

2. Rear Cargo Panels - Used 1/4" MDF. Cut some holes for cargo access and used an old truck tool box for the diamond plate. Had enough diamond plate leftover that I put a piece on the tailgate. I'll eventually turn that into a cargo hatch as well. Bought the latches on eBay, brand name Southco. Also lined the inside of the cargo areas with leftover carpet.

3. Center Console - Made of 3/4" MDF. Nice foam cushion, large storage area and best of all, two nice big cup holders, made just right for 32 and 44 oz Dr. Peppers. Hardest part of the whole project was wrapping the material around the foam and board. I would make a terrible upholsterer.

4. Stereo system - Clarion deck with Kicker 6.5" in front and 6x9" in the rear. I mounted the front speakers by spraying in foam gap filler and pressing a thin piece of cardboard flush against the sheet metal of the door. After the foam dried, I cut out a hole to accommodate the speaker. Then I cut a hole in the door panel and attached the speaker directly into the sheet metal with screws and the foam as backing. Worked great, no rattling and the windows still roll down.

5. New Seat Covers and Floor Mats - Got both off Amazon. Fit and look great. The mat in the rear cargo area was an old pickup bed mat that I cut in half and slapped some gray spray paint on.

Below are the before and after pics. Next will be doing the face lift on the exterior.

That great.
I've been been wanting to make my own rear cargo panels. You may have just inspired me to do it. I may also have to try your carped dying trick.

How did you attach your covering to the panels?

Well done!

impressive!

Really cool! On the rear tailgate deck, did you just surface it with the diamond plate, or did you cut out piece and cover the hole? Could you post close ups of that and the rear side panels? I really like you work.

Glad I could inspire you and hope I can help.

The panels are just spray painted. I attached the diamond plate to the mdf with 1/2" bolts. The diamond plate has a piano hinge attached with rivets. You can see the break near the bottom. The coolest find I thought were the latches. Check on eBay, there's hundreds of different styles.

And if you do the carpet dye be sure to wash the carpet really well. I spent $10 in quarters at the wash and wish I would have done another $10.

What did you use to screw in to? Nutserts?

I took the plastic nuts out and actually bolted it through the old holes for the nutserts. Had to use washers on the back side to compensate for the big holes.

Thanks for the compliments. On the tailgate I just placed the diamond plate over the sheet metal of the gate without cutting a hole. I'll eventually cut a hole and turn it into a storage area, but need to get a new tail get at some point. Attached the diamond plate to the gate using sheet metal screws.

I'll take some close ups and post them for you.

Looks awesome, great job!!!. Mind posting up some dimensions for your center console? Looks really good and take it you dont have the rear heater..
