Looking to mount a shovel and axe to the back of my rear seat somehow...help me brainstorm. Anyone else have anything rigged up?

USE SELF TAPpERS to mount quick fist mounts. i love mine but i have them mounted to my rack. priced right too

I was looking at Summit Racing. Maybe I could get some window nets, sew them together and mount them on the back of the seat. Could hook stuff all over that with quick fists, carabiners, etc...

Wonder if my wife's machine could sew that or if I need someone professional to do it.

I'd use quickfists. Self-tapping screws are one option, but can also remove the carpet, drill a hole, and feed a bolt from the inside. Quickfists in any case, only option is how you mount them.

Instead of the back seat I went this route for a mounting location https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/278638-cruiser-field-biology.html

Maybe a headrest mounted gun rack could work

FJ60 rear seats don't have headrests.

I like the widow mount set up better than the back of the rear seat because it seems like it's easier to get to the shovel and axe when the truck back is full.

Another place to consider is under the rear seat bench. There is quite a bit of space under there and it's relatively easy access. get the passengers out and flip the seat up. The shovel might have to be short and straight to fit under there. an axe would fit no problem.

Seems like that would be harder to get to if the back was loaded, since the one QuickFist looks like you'd have to climb in the back seat to undo one and swing my tire rack out to get to the other.

If it's on the back of the seat, I can just climb in and unhook them and pull it out.

Not knowing how well the QuickFists hold, I'd feel safer with the axe shovel down behind the back seat and not sitting in the window pointed towards my passengers.

I'll check that out...I had not figured that out there was storage under there. That would be a pain in the butt if I have car seats for my kids installed, but easy if I was just wheeling with friends.

I plan to use a shorter shovel (probably about axe length). I have one in the shed, so that's something I don't need to buy.

The QuickFists hold the axe and shovel tightly and they're easy enough to pull out. I'm not concerned with those items coming loose in an accident, OTOH all the loose junk in the back...

It all comes down to what you want and what compromises you're willing to accept, because you'll never have the absolutely perfect mounting setup.

x2 on the Quickfists. Super nice and sturdy.

So, I'm gonna do a cargo net/MOLLE type thing on the back seat. It's going to be about $45 in materials (1" polypro webbing) and $75 for a lady to sew it for me.

Here's my mock up, don't laugh I did it with paint on my netbook since I was too lazy to go downstairs and do it on the Mac with PhotoShop...

Compact shovels are better than nothing but short shovels border on worthless. The only time I have ever needed a shovel I was sorry I didn't carry a "real" shovel. Now I have a long handle full size shovel mounted to my roof rack. The first time you use it you will be glad you made room for it.

Just something to consider

I'll get one somewhere between 50" and 36". Probably 44/48. Don't really see myself using it often.

And the stuff just sits in the net or are you still going to be using quickfists to hold it there?

Pretty sure I'm going to quickfist the shovel,axe,pointy/sharp stuff unless I can find something better. Other stuff should attach with MOLLE gear.

You could always get an MPAC rack about the same size. A little bit more expensive than $120 for what you want made. But it would be steel and could be mounted to the back seat easily enough. I dunno how well quickfists would work attached to just webbing. Take the carpet off the rear seat to expose the metal and mount it.

Biggest MPAC rack is $200. I mounted the FJ Cruiser side rack on my passenger side cargo panels.
