Last year I sourced a old 2F and decided to replace my old ( 450 000 km ) 3F carbed engine .

The plan :
1. 2F block ( decked by about 0.010" AND overbore 0.060" ) that will have displacement of 4,4l ( 4370cc )

2. 3F Head ( skimmed by 1mm to get higher compression - 8,8 to 9:1 )
3. 3F intake manifold and headers ( to match the head )
4. 3F carb
5. 3F dizzy with ei .
6. 2F cam regrind to 262 advertised duration or as advised by cam specialist
7. all rotating parts balanced
8. New upgraded rod bolts ( ARP from Toyota Supra )
9. New pumps ( oil , fuel , water )
10. New Cam gear sprocket ( solid metal )
11. Head ported

I stuck to the plan except for the Camshaft . Here I fitted a Delta KC859-250s cam ( More detail in Tonyota's camshaft thread ).
The compression ended at 9,5 ( more than planned but had no option as the head was already skimmed to the max in the past ).

During the last three days the following happened

Engine on the floor ( last week )

Now I cannot wait for the rest of the stuff to be mounted and get the engine started .

I want to thank all the members who helped in sourcing info .
In particular Rockdoc , JimC , Marshall and Mark W - you guys inspired me .

Hey I've built a similar engine they are great. Don't forget valve springs. Your stock ones will not work with the shaved head and taller cam. I used some sbc springs with an inner coil.

I never get used to seeing everything on the wrong side !

:D

The SBC valve springs went in yesterday - it reduced a lot of valve train noise I experienced .
What are the advantages of using a 3f head?
Note: this is a carbed 3F head .
The chambers are smaller and the kidney shape of the chambers make them less prone to predetonation .
I can run at higher compression ratio using regular octane ( 95 here in SA ) petrol.
I could also just transfer my manifold and headers of my 3F directly to this rebuild.

carbed 3f

yeah I noticed you didnt do it for the FI so I figured there must be other reasons. so that head bolts right up as a direct swap with no probs with water jackets, gaskets and so on and everything lines right up or did you have to do some mods?

did you use a 3f or 2f head gasket? Sorry I know zero about 3Fs
my 40 is my first Toyota

Thanks

Straight bolt on - the late 2F's were already fitted with the 3F heads from the factory .

I ordered both 3F and 2F gaskets . I checked to see which one fitted best and used the 2F gasket .

No mods necessary - same engine mounts for 2F and 3F block , same manifolds , same carb and dizzy used . I had to use the 2F aircon , made a bracket to use the 3F P/S and used a Bosch alternator.
