I'll get you a data point after work today. I have an 89, made in December of 88.

Data

I think yours is a very early 88.

From my 1989, built 12/88......3F 0217814

Funny-When I first looked, I could not see any numbers or letters on the casting. I had to wipe off 20 years (this month!) of accumulated grime and then the numbers were visible.

You should be able to tell by the computer as well-the part number is stamped on it and I *think* they were different 62 vs 80.

Hmmm, just noticed you have a 7th digit vs. my 6 digits...

Can anyone help me figure out what year Cruiser my 3FE was used in?

Block # 3F 017791

(Hard to read the 3F part)

I got this 3FE in a '74 Pig (FJ55) and PO could not tell me what year 3FE it was...

Can you help

Andrew, I wanted to check back in with you on this...

At first I thought you may have fat-fingered an extra digit into your number (7 digits vs. 6), but then I saw you said "casting". Is this the number stamped into the block down by the starter? If so, does it really have 7 digits after the "3F"?

Thanks!

Hmm,

I got this info from the LCML:

I suspect it is a 1988 based on the info below:

Flywheel Assembly Revisions On
1988-92 Toyota 4.0L Landcruiser Engines

Toyota has changed the flywheel assembly and crankshaft on 4.0L engines
installed in the Landcruiser starting with the model produced in October of
1989. The revised engines carry an engine number of 3F-250226 or later.

from: http://www.rebuiltautoengines.com/toyota-articles.html

It would seem that your engine is considerably earlier than the number for
the revised engines which came out in Oct 1989. Either way, this was
probably the only major revision of that engine and even if it were a 1989,
the specs are probably exactly the same as a 1988. To get additional
confirmation you could start checking other engine part numbers between 1988
and pre Oct 1989 engines to see if you can find any differences.

The link generates an internal server error message.

I'll recheck when things dry out, but I'm pretty sure I wrote down what was there.

The numbers are on the little projection from the side of the block where all F series motors have a serial #. It is just above the starter. Please note, the numbers are stamped and not cast.

We have 2 FJ62s with the 3FE engine. One is a 9/87 production (1988 model year) and the other is a 6/89 production (1989 model year). Let me know if having these engine numbers would help. I've have to go look for them on the block and report back. Will take a day or two.

Added 12/21/89:
Correction: Turns out the 1988 is actually a production date of Dec 87.

Yep, those two would definitely help!

Thanks for helping out!

ok, here's mine and as far as I know these are original engines:

1988 FJ62, Production Date: Dec 87, Engine ID: 3F 0169671

1989 FJ62, Production Date: 6/89, Engine ID: 3F 0238337

Sidebar:
Something interesting I never noticed before is that the Dec 87 vehicle has a metal ID tag riveted to the door jam. The 6/89 has a sticker ID tag so looks like Toyota eliminated the metal ID tag.

Also, the metal tag is stamped with "Dec" for the month whereas the sticker on the 89 is a number representing the date "6/89" rather than "Jun 89".

Oh, one more thing, on the 89 there was a cable harness that ran over the top of the last digit on the engine ID number blocking it from view and I had to move this harness aside to see the last digit. This digit is very near the edge of the flat casting so it almost looked like there was not another digit until I looked closer.
