Here is a pic of my newly acquired fj40. I would like help understanding if this looks like factory steering column? I would like to buy a used steering wheel, keyed ignition, and blinker switch that is compatible with a 64 to replace the previous owners work. I think I need a 36 spline. I am also wanting to know if this carb is factory? I tried reading though the FAQ section of carb ID and can't figure out what I have. Thanks for any and all helpful suggestions on where to start.

I will also keep searching and reading to find more info.

You guys are awesome!

not oem carb...maybe quadrajet. can't quite tell but on of your pics shows the manufacturer logo. steer column looks correct, but horn button, turn signal and wheel are aftermarket. you are missing all the column shift stuff

Too bad someone hacked into the dash :frown:

The good news is that your missing items are easily obtainable.... especially through this website. Good luck.

So the carb might be a quadrajet huh. I will try finding some more info on those and comparing. I think I can find the right steering wheel, ignition and blinker switch, I just need patience in waiting and time to look around the classifieds.

I have found some 36 spline steering wheels for tractors but they don't have a horn button. I have found a hand full of 33 spline later model steering wheels and columns but haven't found a 36 yet.

One other thing I need to start researching is seat options (FAQ)!

If anyone else knows the carb info that would be great. Thanks.

Parts for these early FJ40 are no that easy to find. Good early steering wheels don't come very often. If you find one buy it. You should have a large window carb. Finding a good can be a problem.

What does he VIN start with? My guess it's a 3. The windshield lock in the up right posistion is pre 64. Probably have a tool box under the seat that is angled by the transmission cover. 64 would be a rectangle. 64 had handles on the back hatch to push the bottoms in. Couldn't tell but is the B pillar behind he door higher than he rest of the tub?

Thanks for the help. I will check the tool box under the seat and the b pillar when I go out. I haven't read the vin, but the firewall tag has good information, but that doesn't mean it helps me ID the carb after 50 years.

truck is a 1962 sold in 1964. you need to source parts for a 1962.

Looks like it was for a big screen tv that's a huge hole. Love the early cruisers know you'll enjoy it

Here is a pic of the pilar I think. And the tool storage.

Correct parts are hard to come buy, very close ones are not. I put a much later 1960's steering column in mine and was easily able to find the column shift linkage. I also got the later steering box stand and a good steering wheel for the later column. Finding a 1962 style column seemed impossible and mine was a mess. You could patch the dash with sheet metal and use some epoxy to build back up the ribs, would be easy. Looks like a pretty solid cruiser. You will need to figure out what all you really have, is the engine and drive train correct, hard to see from the pictures. You will want to get the correct parts and there is a lot of difference between 1962 and later MFG dates.

Thanks for the steering idea.

The carburetor is a Rochester 2 barrel with the 2 barrel intake it looks like. No throttle linkage or choke cable. Not sure if the engine is original or not. Cannot find the engine number stamped on it. Suggestions?

So do people cut off the pillar so it doesn't stick up in the summer with the top off? And fix the cut off piece to the top?

As for the epoxy idea that might work great. I also found a billet aluminum dash kit for $50 that will cover it up, or I can fab my own I think, but will lose the ripples.

Corleykj, I have a 64 FJ40 that I believe was manufactured in 63. A lot of the frame and body is original. But it has a SBC and a SM465 Muncie transmission. If specific photos will help, let me know.

Cjgoode,
How hard was it to install a late model column in the early model fj40? I can find some late model columns and I think that is the route to go.
Do you have pics of yours? Where do you disconnect the old collumn...the steering box?
Thanks.
Kyle

The aluminum intake is a dead giveaway that it's not an original engine. Engine I.D. is on the passenger side on a boss to the rear of the distributor. Hopefully you do not have a black-capped Delco dizzy to match that Rochester carb.

I am pulling a very good 1966 column/steering box out of a rig at the shop this week to do a power steering conversion. If your box is shot, I can rebuild this one, and you won't have to do a pedestal swap. That said, I think the decision on which box to use should be based on what size tires you plan to run.

Best

Mark,
Thanks for the feedback. Will you shoot me a price for the column and steering wheel? Will it have the blinker switch still? What are your thoughts on the pedestal? I guess I am not sure where I need to do the swap. So if I need a pedestal can you give me a price. I really need a wheel and blinker switch/mechanism that will fit my splines is where I am starting at but if I need more you think send me a price.

About the engine. I found a block Id on the drivers side but I erased it from my phone. I think it was something like 14111 but I will check behind the distributer.

Thanks.

So you mentioned the engine not being original. I read that manafre did some two barrel manifolds and Rochester carbs at one time. But I don't know the f engines well at all. So do you think the engine isn't a factory engine. I found some messed up stuff. Here is a few pics if anyone can help.

There is some weird valve cover hose with a brass fitting inside that was just shoved in a hole???

This was a hack job all over and I will be dealing with some headaches.

On the steering stuff, you should call me at the shop to talk business. I try to keep my posts in tech as close to tech as possible. Don't always succeed tho.

On the engine, if all the parts are from one engine, that would be a 1973, based on the dual groove water pump pulley and provision in the air cleaner for air pump source air.

Not much point in trying to source a 1bbl carb for that engine IMO. Just get an early 70s stock carb that is compatible with the air cleaner you have.
