so the serial number on the block is : F574702

and the oil filter screws on the right side of the block between fuel pump and dizzy.

which both lead me to believe its an F and half.....

but the valve cover has an oil fill on it........

on the spector and ccruisers id files---the F57codes are all later 74models......

are the valve covers interchangable on these F;s?

and is there any way to decifer these engine codes according to date?

I just checked my engine serial number list and I would guess it is a later November or maybe December F engine - commonly called a F1.5. Jan 1975 is when the 2F engine came out.

I also have a F1.5 and as you described the oil filter is on the passenger side of the block.

If the valve cover you have is aluminum and looks like a 2F cover it has probably been up graded to the 2F cover which I also have and seems to be a good upgrade and is done to help oil leaks.

I have (maybe??) attached a couple photos of my F1 with 2F Valve cover that I finally figured out it was a 1.5 engine. The difference as I understand it is an F engine with a 2F engine oiling system.

If it wasn't on the valve cover where do you think it should be? The pre 72 models had a tube that when into the block about where your oil filter is. After that all F engines had a oil fill in the valve cover.

1F in my 1971 FJ40. oil filler is on the side of the block.

The oil FILLER is on the pass side of "F" engines and they have the FILTER on the driver side. "F.5" have the FILTER on the pass side and the FILLER in the valve cover. 1Fs had the PCV port in the FILLER tube, "F.5" engines will have the PCV port on the front of the lifter cover and 2Fs will have the PCV port at the rear of the lifter cover.

You can also interchange valve covers on all F engines and early 2Fs. They changed the vlv cover studs on the later heads but you can swap covers if you swap the studs at the same time.

Is that the original engine??? I'm not sure when the change happened.

As far as I know it is, added the electric fuel pump and 60 dizzy. Not trying to hijack the thread though, but here is the numbers on the engine looks to be original to my April 71 FJ40.

That is a great looking engine. Love the gray on it. Did you rattle can it or powder coat?

Rattle canned with some Rustoleum Engine Enamel.

The last three model years ( 72/73/74) of the F engine had a oil fill on top of the valve cover. The PCV was on the side cover on those three model years. If you don't think it hapened this way how do you explain all the steel valve covers with a oil fill. All 2F engines came to this country with a aluminum valve.

Also not trying to hijack but my '68 has an engine number 518836. The chart on sor has a lot of months with no number. Late in 73 is 510001 and the next number is in April of 74 at 54xxxx (I think). Are the months with a number the only months with production or are we just supposed to guess which month any given number is from?

Either way, I guess my truck is on it's second engine (or third or fourth....) which has a filler in the valve cover, filter on the passenger side, and a Pcv valve on the front of the side cover. Also no oil bath air cleaner. Sooooo it is an F which is commonly called, correctly or not, an F1.5 (F.5, f and a half, etc...) Am I getting this right?

If your oil filter is a spin on style mounted by the fuel pump it is that last version of the F engine (74) with the improved oiling system. The earlier oil filters were mounted to the intake manifold. It was a canister style until 3/69 when it switched to a spin on style which is a lot less messy to deal with when changing.

Oil bath air cleaners pretty much ended with the F135 and switched to paper element here in the US. A few paper element style were found on earlier cruisers but not sure I've seen a oil bath air cleaner for a two barrel carburator that was imported here by Toyota.

What I've got.
Looks just like mine (from an early 72, built in late 71), no idea if the engine is original or not.

Just checked that chart, my engine number is F 376273 - looks like it may be an original, the timing (built in late Sept 71) would probably be about right for a Dec 71 build.
