So I happened across this bj garaged since new with only 25,000 miles. Yes- only 25,000! And it's for sale.....

A little background on my situation. I have a bj44 with 120,000 miles. The truck was poorly maintained but not too bad. Rust wise the rear is very clean but the rockers are shot. Bib, fenders, doors and hood all need to be replaced. I already have a set of factory fenders. The roof needs to come off and get the channel replaced. Needs all new rubber seals. Mechanically it is good. There are little things like an air leak n the injection system etc that need attention but most of the stuff that has needed to be taken care of has been done. The only looming issue is blowby- the engine will need some internal attention at some point- or just a replacement. Other things.... Needs springs and shock along with new bushings. Needs a new radiator or a recorded one. The biggie really is the rockers and paint. The whole thing is a mix of Freebrn and red oxide primer. Oddly it works but the primer is not a good long term solution. The remaining freeborn paint is base clear and the clear is peeling. So with that all in mind I've been planning on doing a full body restore. This has al lead me in the direction of making it into my dream truck. I like the older trucks and I'm been dreaming of restoring this as an older truck but with all the good later stuff that it came with. but the list of things to do/ mods is not lacking in detail. That is to say I have tons of ideas for how I'd like it to be.

The catch is that with 2 small kids and my own business I barely have time to touch the truck. Regular maintenance gets completed but barely. Nor do i want to spend the very little time I could be camping with the kids working on the truck. And honestly I really can't do a full restore as I need the truck daily.

The bj for sale is very cool but aside from being in like new condition it is not as classic as a 60's or early 70's truck. The fender flares, mirrors, blinkers, seats as well as the digital clock and dash are not exemplary of the era that I really love. All the details of the early truck- man they just rock! Plus those early colors- freakin cool. This truck is not a color I would choose if I could.

But the chance to have "new" bj46.... One that won't need any of the stuff tht my truck needs or will need in the next 5 years for another 25. One that I can maintain from the beginning as the factory prescribed. I mean it's still a 40 series truck.

So their u have it- go for the dream truck build of get the one that is ready to go for the long haul and call it good( for the time being). In the end they will cost the same. In fact in the end the low mile truck may prove to be cheaper. Especially so if I factor in my own time. Just so u know I've already calculated how many mile I'll put on the truck by the time I'm 80 (and I'm only 42 now.)

Why say Ye mud?

Pics man, pics.....
Boy Pete, is the price prohibitive? Can you afford to pick up the bj and park yours for a while? Kids grow up fast and it won't be long before you can start working on the 44? Maybe even with the kids help? Hard to pass on a "new" one.

Well let me just say- I've never bought anything this expensive before. It will be the same as buying a (cheaper) new car (until now an 89 nissan patrol is the newest car Ive had) and I'm not sure if I can come up with the $$$ But I've pretty much decided that I'll try to get it if I can pull it off. My bj is not worth selling right now because despite the fact that it is actually in much much better condition than when I bought it it doesn't look like it. Looks sell here. No one asks for maintenance records. So I'd just keep it and work on it long term.

go for it :) as the kids are saying these days, You Only Live Once :) (who knew right?)

Methinks ..... go easy on youself Pete.
Raising kids in Japan is a huge burden on a working mom too.
Probably worse for her cause she has to deal with a lot of things that gaijins can't.
(At least I was pretty useless)
I had 3 kids there under 10 and the stress coupled with job demands was killer.

That cruiser has been in a garage a lot over 25 years ... maybe the owner will let you give a downpayment to hold it for 6 months or a year till you get the 44 in sellable shape or fill up the piggybank some more.
It will be an good incentive to do what you need to now and then life will be more relaxed with the new cruiser.

Hate for it to become your dream cruiser .... that got away!

So- i bought it. Here are the pics from the auction. It was a government auction. This cruiser is well maintained garaged since new. Can't wait to get my hands on it.....

WOW Pete, that 44 looks amazing. I am SOOOO jealous of the soft top. Congrats!!

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: WOW! ......no words.........:clap::clap::clap:

That is fabulous.

Amazing car dude. I wouldn't even know what to do with a car in as good of condition as that!

How much you end up paying? Were you bidding against many others?

Thanks for the comments. I'm very excited to say the least but I may not get to see it until august unfortunately. I'm thinking to wait till then so i can take it on a little trip before it gets stashed away for a while. I'm totally psyched for the soft top and i have an excellent condition hard top to use on it as well.

In terms of what to do with it- I'm going to use it. The truck i have now will be my practice truck. I'll try everything i want to do on it first and use it for few more years. Once i get it all sorted out I'll move everything over to the "new truck." pto winch will go on as well as the cable lockers. The kids rear seat will go in. Some slight retrofication will happen but not too much that is undoable. Though this may ruffle some feathers being such a pristine example I'm going to tailor it to suit my needs then it will be my daily driver.

This was a silent auction so i have no idea what others put in for bids. I know that to restore a truck into this condition with paint and bodywork etc could very easily get to the $20,000 plus range. I know that at least 3 other prospective buyers shelled out the dough to get all way down to the tip of Kyushu which in my case would cost in the $500 range. I know that some of the other prospective buyers were likely L.C. Specialty shops looking to flip. I figured that they would sell it in the $20,000 range and would try to buy it in the $13,000 range, So I mustered all of my resources and bid more than that knowing that with the sickness i have for fixing cars that it would cost me less in the long run than a full resto on my current ride especially factoring in my own time. And as I mentioned above i simply have little or know time to keep my current ride from going south fast rust wise.

I figure between the bj44 and the bj46 I'm pretty much set for life. When i switch over to the bj46 I'll have a long time to restore the body on the bj44 before i need it again.

Very nice cruiser !!!

So, you going to take the hard top off the 44 and put it on the 46? (sorry if I missed it if you mentioned it already)

Curious about that bar going across behind the front seats...

Great plan to have this one to drive, and now you can take your time, and work on your 44 as time, and budget permit.

Looking forward to more pics...again, congrats...very nice looking rig !!!

Great score Pete. You will not regret your buying it. Even you can't keep it I'm sure someone from Mud would buy it at a profit. Not sure if you have a garage or not. That would be my biggest concern. The only reason I bought my one owner 70 FJ40 last year was because I had a garage in a cool climit to store it in. You don't want this thing weathering away outside. It's a great investment but needs to be protected. Seems I remember your BJ44 getting damaged from some roofing material falling on it.

Few questions. I see it has factory A/C and a late model with the insert dash. Does it also have power steering and five speed? All I can say Pete is I'm jealous. Here in the US we can only dream of finding a sweet cruiser like that at auction that wouldn't be all over the net and bid way out of range for most of us.
