wondering if anyone has any advice for me on restoring this steering wheel cap. The wheel has a few minor cracks in it. I plan to open those a bit with a dremel and use jb weld to fill them. Then I will sand the whole thing down and paint with plastic paint. I do not know what to do with the center part of the wheel though. The plastic is spider cracking and I am wondering how one would pull that off and if it is possible to buff those cracks out?? or if someone knows someone whom restores this type of stuff?

thanks,

Noah

I have the same cracks and I don't think they're going to buff out. I knida like the cracks in mine because it reminds me of when I found a no sh*t crack rock under there...led to my wife calling the 40 "the Mule."

I wet sanded mine with very fine sandpaper (1000 grit) then shot it with some clear paint. Worked great.

Let us know how the JB weld works. Just repaired a leak in my gas tank with it. Great stuff.

Not sure why the pic didn't load, or maybe it did.

great, thx for the pic, do you have one closer that shows the cap? would like to see how it came out. I will try the fine sandpaper. Thinking of doing fine sandpaper and then some plastic polish on a buffing wheel. Not sure how deep the cracks are though. Would really appreciate a before and after photo of the cap if you have it? that way I can compare with the way mine looks now.

You can still see the cracks, the clear paint just gave me a smooth finish. Not sure if polishing will get it all, mine were pretty deep.

The nice thing about sanding and spraying with clear was that it took the 'cloudiness' out of it. It's just as shiny as the day it was born.

I can have them repaired for $150 a pop, I have done a lot for guys on here. They look brand new!

Lol, just stumbled across this on ebay. Looks like someone could retire if they figure out how to restore the later center caps!
